Last year, director Fede Alvarez bought us “Alien: Romulus,” a film designed to take place between 1979’s “Alien” and 1986’s “Aliens.” It also rolled in later franchise entries with references to 1997’s “Alien: Resurrection,” 2012’s “Prometheus,” and the 2014 video game “Alien: Isolation.” Creating a movie heavily steeped in the mythology of its predecessors, while introducing new characters and its own variations.
Alvarez says he will take a different path if a sequel to “Romulus” ever comes to fruition.

Alvarez‘s Follow-Up
“Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now,” Alvarez told Empire. “We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.”
The director hints a follow-up would follow Rain, one of the new characters from “Romulus,” played by Cailee Spaeny. “I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before,” he explains. The catch here is, a sequel will only materialize if Alvarez and Sayagues find a story they want to tell.

“The mistake usually with sequels is to make them because you can, and because of the success of Romulus, we definitely can make a sequel,” Alvarez said. “But I wouldn’t do it unless we have a really good idea for it, something that’s worthy of the title.” And we’re sure most fans can think of a few sequeals that should never have happened.
We cannot wait to see what this duo may come up with and how they could push the well-established universe into a new direction.
“Alien: Romulus” is currently available to stream on Hulu or on DVD and 4K. We’ll keep you posted on updates about a sequel if/when they become available.
