“28 Years Later” Gets Official Poster and Plot from Sony

In 2002, “28 Days Later,” directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, hit theaters. The gritty post-apocalyptic zombie flick captivated audiences, and in 2007 Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed the follow-up “28 Weeks Later.” Now, Boyle and Garland are back for the third installment “28 Years Later” which Sony has just released the first poster for.

The new horror movie will star Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kraven The Hunter”), Ralph Fiennes (“The Menu,” “The Return”), Jack O’Connell (“Amy Winehouse: Back To Black”), and Erin Kellyman (“Willow”). Oscar winner Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), who starred in the first film, is also returning to the franchise.

The first poster shows a biohazard sign formed by blood-red skulls with “28 Years Later” on top of it. Its tagline “Time Doesn’t Heal Anything” is written with scratched lettering. This minimalist poster doesn’t give us much to go on for what the film will bring.

Thankfully Fiennes spilled the beans on the plot to “28 Years Later.” “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities,” he told IndieWire. “And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good.”

    Another Movie

Now that we have a poster and plot, the production has thrown another curve ball. It was already established that “28 Years Later” was supposed to kick off a new trilogy of films. Come to find out, the first TWO installments have already been shot.  “It’s three films, of which two have been shot,” Fiennes explains.

Boyle directs the first installment, and Nia DaCosta (“Candyman”) directs the second. Little else is known about DaCosta’s film at this time.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about both projects as they develop.
