After much back and forth, Sony’s upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” sequel will have one of the franchise’s key stars returning. Freddie Prinze Jr (“The Girl in the Pool”) has officially joined the cast, reprising his role as Ray Bronson from the original 1997 movie and the 1998 follow-up.

In February 2023, it was reported that Prinze and co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt (“Ghost Whisperer”) would return. A few months later, in March, the actor revealed that he wasn’t attached to the project at all.

“I have been offered nothing, nothing,” Prinze Jr. said at the time. “They just said that to get people excited. I haven’t spoken to anyone at their company, my agents haven’t received an offer from them whatsoever. I had a conversation with the director a few days after they announced that just to be like, ‘Yo, what the hell? Why are they saying I’m going to be in a movie that I’m probably not going to be in?’ And she said, ‘Let me pitch you the idea.’ So she’s spoken to me about the idea, but I haven’t said yes, I haven’t received an offer.”

However, he did add “I have no reason to lie to anyone, I have no skin in the game. I’m only gonna do things that I like and work with people that I like and there’s not gonna be any wiggle room this time around. I messed up the first time around; this time I just want to do stuff I’m passionate about. So yeah. I haven’t read a script.”

So we hope this means that Prinze was finally sent an offer and a script he liked. He is joining the previously announced Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King.  Love Hewitt is apparently still negotiating to reprise her role as Julie James.

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” will be directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson from a script by Sam Lansky and Kaytin Robinson, from a draft by Leah McKendrick. At this time, plot details are still under wraps. It’s is slated to hit theaters July 18th, 2025. We’ll keep you posted on updates about the project as they become available.
