We’re just going to start by ripping this band-aid off, no, there are no plans to make “Goonies 2.” Despite reports earlier this week a sequel to the Richard Donner-directed classic is not in any form of development.
On September 6th, The Sun reported “Goonies 2” had been greenlit, and was actively being developed. “The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time but it’s finally been given the green light to go ahead,” an unidentified source told the outlet. “The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027. The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros’ know they have to get it totally right. It’s likely major stars will come back but the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless.”
This news soon spread like wildfire ballooning into a rumor that Steven Spielberg was already attached to direct. Considering he co-wrote the original film with Chris Columbus, and original director Richard Donner passed away in 2021, Spielberg would be the most logical choice. However, he is not attached and seemingly knows nothing about the project. The cast sure didn’t…
Cast Reaction to “Goonies 2”
“Goonies” stars Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton have already taken to social media to try to quell the rumors.
“People, there is no ‘Goonies 2’ script, there is no one ‘attached,’” Plimpton posted in an image on Instagram. “Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real. What IS real is CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION AND VOTE!!!!”
Feldman took a less political approach. “2’SDAY, IS #GOONIES2 REAL?! EVERY1 IS ASKING…I CAN OFFICIALLY TELL U 100% NO! I HAV NO INFO THAT A SEQUEL IS IN THE WORX,” he posted to X (formally Twitter).
Whereas their co-star Sean Astin decided to be a little chaos goblin and fuel the rumors. He posted a fake “Goonies 2” poster captioned with “It’s our time. C’mon Steven…”
While it does seem like core cast members would be willing to return for “Goonies 2.” Not to mention all the obvious fan interest, there is no proof that anything is in the works at this time.
We’re not saying die, because Goonies never say that. We’re just saying; don’t give your hopes up for “Goonies 2” anytime in the near future.
