Specialty retailer Build-A-Bear Workshop has been delighting customers of all ages with customer stuffed animals since 1997. Recently, the company offered a plushie of everyone’s favorite cryptid Mothman. It, of course, immediately sold out.

    [So, not punk rock]

“A mysterious winged friend appears by popular demand – or does he? Now you can take flight with your own Mothman plush,” the description reads. “Inspired by the mystery and intrigue of the folklore legend reportedly seen in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, this paranormal plush has soft black fur with bright red eyes. Personalize this lovable legend with his own outfits, sounds, scents and accessories to make him even more unique!”

This 16-inch plush toy is all black, making its bright red eyes really pop. Its adorable little jet-black wings are affixed to its back.

    What is Mothman?

Mothman is a humanoid creature that was reportedly first seen in the Point Pleasant, WV area on November 15, 1966. The cryptid is described as a roughly seven-foot tall, slender, muscular man with white wings. There is little known about its facial features aside from the hypnotic effect of its glowing red eyes.

The last Mothman sighting was on December 15, 1967, before the collapse of the Silver Bridge, resulting in the death of 46 people. Giving rise to the legend that the cryptid was a harbinger of disaster.

While Mothman has continued to be a cornerstone of West Virginia folklore, he has developed a following in pop culture nationwide. Mostly thanks to John Keel’s 1975 book “The Mothman Prophecies” which inspired a 2002 film by the same name.

We certainly hope the success of Build-a-Bear’s Mothman will warrant a second run. You can check out the plush here. Copies of Keel’s novel are available here.
