While we’re on the subject of the Academy Awards finally entertaining the idea of acknowledging the stunts community with an Oscar…
An interesting story out of Southern California of a YouTuber behaving badly, and being arrested for it. Specifically, the viral ‘stunt’ personality ‘Alex Choi’ filmed out in El Mirage in July of 2023. The dry lakebed is an iconic filming location, playing home to films, television shows, and music videos for decades. But this most recent project ended up with Choi (legal name Suk Min Choi) getting arrested for shooting fireworks at a Lamborghini from a helicopter.
“During this portion of the video, Choi allegedly makes various references to himself coordinating the shoot,” the Justice Department said in a statement. “Specifically, the video states that Choi directed it. In the video, Choi thanks a camera company for ‘being a part of my crazy stupid ideas.’ He also allegedly said in the video that the group who helped make the video ‘(expletive) up’ at one point ‘because I forgot to tell my friend how to use a torch.'”
We’re also assuming that maybe, just maybe, Choi didn’t have proper permitting for this shoot.
Choi has been charged with one count of causing the placement of an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft. He was taken into custody June 5th, and appeared in court on June 6th. A federal magistrate judge ordered him released on $50,000 bond. Choi’s arraignment is scheduled for July 2nd.
