Toronto-based filmmaker and TOTALLY NOT A NEPO BABY Caitlin Cronenberg will be making her directorial feature debut with the upcoming “Humane.” An eco-thriller starring Peter Gallagher, Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, and Enrico Colantoni, and written by Michael Sparaga.
“Humane” will take place a few months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. It will take place over a single day, and tell the story of a wealthy patriarch (Gallagher). He invites his children (Baruchel and Hampshire) to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in a new euthanasia program. But when his plan goes awry, tensions flare and chaos ensues.
Previous Works
Cronenberg is the daughter of body horror legend David Cronenberg. Her brother Brandon Cronenberg has also made waves with his films “Possessor” and “Infinity Pool.” Caitlin has previously directed the short films “The Endings” and “The Death of David Cronenberg,” which stars her father.
Now, she is branching out into feature films with “Humane” which she describes as her ideal project. “It had humor and darkness and felt timely while still essentially being a family drama,” Cronenberg said. “Michael [Sparaga] is a brilliant writer and I knew he’d be amazing to collaborate with through this process. I don’t consider it a straight horror film as it doesn’t necessarily fit into the classic definition of horror. I like to think of it as genre-bending or a ‘family thriller.’ The characters had so many levels we knew it would attract a brilliant cast, and it all just fell into place.”
“We had an incredible crew of talented artists both in front of and behind the camera, and no detail was left undiscussed,” she adds. “I hope our audience gets engrossed in the world of ‘Humane’ and enjoys the ride!” If the trailer is any indication, we’re sure audiences will be.
“Humane” will hit select theaters on April 26th, and starts streaming July 26th on Shudder. You can check out the trailer below:
