Animation’s Biggest Night: The 51st Annie Awards

From “Spider-Man” to “Blue Eye Samurai” and Snoopy, the animation community came together at the 51st Annie Awards to celebrate the 2023 season. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” caught seven awards in its web, including Best Picture. As for television, “Blue Eye Samurai” took home quite the slice of the categories with a total of six wins.

    Authenticity, Seen and Heard

One of the most rewarding things to see this year was the increasing variegation of representation. With nominees from a bevy of identities, progress is eeking its way into the field.

Authenticity was also key, with projects like “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”, “My Dad the Bounty Hunter”, “Blue Eye Samurai”, “Four Souls of Coyote” and “Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire” as just some of the projects that ensured there was authentic representation.

“It’s about more than populating your films and series with diverse characters. It’s about giving storytellers from different backgrounds and cultures the opportunity to tell their authentic stories, from their unique point of view. When you get a talented creator to tell a story from their perspective, it just hits differently than swapping out one actor for another, or changing the color of the brush you’re painting your main protagonist with.” – Everett Downing, Creator and Executive Producer, “My Dad the Bounty Hunter”

“Even though she’s a fire character, she’s not an Iranian-American, this was the first time I felt like I’m totally myself. She’s wonderful, I felt seen.” – Shila Ommi, Presenter and Voice Actor, “Elemental”

“I felt represented in animation I would say… [“Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”] is about a 13 year old black girl who is a superhero protecting the Lower East Side.” – Diamond White, Presenter and Voice Actor, “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”

“Áron (Gauder) was inspired by growing up listening to stories of indigenous culture and he wanted to make this movie and he went to indigenous leaders here in the United States and learned from them to learn about our culture and work with them to make this incredible movie. And then they wanted to cast the English version authentically so they cast us…” – Danny Kramer, Voice Actor, “Four Souls of Coyote”

“Because when you look at us you would never think we’re Native on the outset, but we’re well represented Neo-Natives and we’re having this opportunity to represent our voices and represent our people for the first time authentically without being questioned every single second about it and having to prove it when we can just be. Because we, just standing here, we’re Native. There’s nothing that we have to prove or show or validate what we carry, and that’s all we need. And that this film, not encapsulated in the writing, but saw it in the casting as well.” – Pricilla Landham, Voice Actor, “Four Souls of Coyote”

DHK: What was the development process like for the visual style? You’ve got drawn lines but they’re obviously 3D models, there’s a bit of a Geri’s Game vibe to the characters too.

Dave Mullins: Yeah that’s fantastic, I mean once we landed on the story and saw that World War One setting, you know, I studied painting in college for a long time. But we looked at painters from the era. So there’s JC Leyendecker, we looked at Norman Rockwell. We really talked to our production designer, Zac Retz, who is a badass. He’s incredible. Then Max Narciso (was) designing our characters, so within their style of how they draw and paint, you wanted those artists to influence something. You know, a lot of Zach’s paintings are right on the screen. And then you know coming from 2D, Brad (Booker) comes from 2D or traditional animation as well, we wanted to really have a sort of love letter with the outline and the quill on top of the characters.

DHK: Who was your chess consultant?

DM: Edward Winter was our chess historian, because if you watch the film the game plays out and you can follow the moves. It’s a very specific game from 1950.

DHK: What was it like striking the balance of finding realism and exaggeration in this kind of ridiculous character that still has to be grounded?

Wētā FX: That’s a really good question. It’s a really tricky one to answer. The director was pushing us always to make the cocaine bear feel more on cocaine right? So there were points where of course she was a bit too far and we had to take it back. But I think always starting from a realistic bear was our goal, and then layering in that extra level of “cocaine-ness” if you want.

    FX Production Company: Framestore
Fernando Herrera, Chris Hurtt, Nathan McConnel, Daniel Cabral, Chris McGaw
DHK: Logistically what was the most challenging scene to get right?

Fernando Herrera: There were a fair few with Rocket, but there was one with Groot fighting Adam Warlock. There’s all these tendrils wrapping around them and it’s super hard to deal with. And a few of Cosmo, the CG dog as well. Cosmo was so hard to get right because if you look at the dog and you don’t feel it’s real it’s like seeing a human. You immediately tell it’s not real.

DHK: Yeah what’s the uncanny valley conversation like?

FH: It’s very similar to a human because we are so close to dogs, right? They’re our best friends so it’s almost like you know dogs as much as you know a human face. So if there’s anything out of place you can tell.

DHK: How many greelbes are on the Transformers? What is the count?

Wētā FX: ~3000 controls and the ability to animate 6000 different pieces.

DHK: How many people use all 6000 and why does that person need therapy?

Wētā FX: There’s still one person using all the controls.

DHK: Emotionally what was the hardest scene to animate? Because obviously you have these not humanoid but humanoid characters and you have to give them a sense of appeal and realtability.

Wētā FX: I think it’s basically what you said, it’s trying to make robots emote and let us feel as humans was one of the toughest things. So subtlety, subtlety was a very tricky things with the robotic face. So I’d say the emotional stuff in the cold open. The emotional stuff with Mirage.

DHK: Which rig has the longest load time?

    Wētā FX: Optimus.

    DHK: How many gigabytes?!

    Wētā FX: Four!
