First Look at Nicholas Hoult from Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu”

Filmmaker Robert Eggers is directing the much-anticipated remake of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 horror classic “Nosferatu.” Eggers has been trying to make this project since 2015, originally intending to be a follow-up to his hit “The VVitch.” Very ambitious considering this is only the second time this film has been adapted. The first remake was done by the legendary Werner Herzog in 1979 as “Nosferatu the Vampyre.”

“Nosferatu” tells the story of the vampire Count Orlok/Dracula expressing interest in purchasing a new residence, but instead becoming obsessed with the real estate agent’s wife. The cast for the upcoming adaptation includes Nicholas Hoult as Thomas Hutter (as seen in the new image above), Lily-Rose Depp as his wife Ellen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Friedrich Harding, Emma Corrin (“The Crown“) as Ann Harding, Willem Dafoe as Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, Simon McBurney as Herr Knock, and Ralph Ineson as Dr. Wilhelm Sievers. Bill Skarsgård will portray the vampire, Count Orlok, a role previously performed by Max Schreck and Klaus Kinski.

Eggers has sung the praises of all the cast, but he has been especially impressed by Skarsgård’s performance. “You can’t detect any Bill here,” he said, going on to describe him as unrecognizable. To be fair, ever since “Hemlock Grove” disappearing into characters is becoming the actor’s trademark. You know, like in “IT.”

“There are things that are Schreck-like but I felt we had to do something else,” Eggers says about “Nosferatu.” “Basically I was like, ‘What would a dead Transylvanian nobleman actually look like for real?” He also revealed that Skarsgård lost a tremendous amount of weight for the role.

“He’s so transformed in every aspect that I don’t know if people will give him the credit. You can see Bill [as Pennywise] in the It make-up; you can’t detect any Bill here. He worked with an opera coach to lower his voice an octave. I think people are going to think we treated it digitally, but that’s his performance.”

“Nosferatu,” will hit theaters December 25th, 2024. We’ll keep you posted on more updates as they become available.
