Guillermo del Toro Almost Directed David S. Goyer’s “Star Wars” Movie

We want you to think long and hard about a pretty amazing what-if. Imagine a world in which Guillermo del Toro directed a “Star Wars” movie. Not only that, but, one written by David S. Goyer (“Dark City,” “Man of Steel,” “Blade“). No really, it could’ve happened!

“I wrote an unproduced Star Wars movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct,” Goyer told Josh Horowitz. Who, understandably, did a HOLD UP pause to get more info. “I have six follow-ups. When?! Tell me something!”

“Yeah, it was about 4 years ago,” Goyer said. “And I also wrote- I have an unproduced scriptment origins of the Jedi movie, also for Star Wars that I wrote for them. That took place 25,000 years before the first Star Wars film.”

That in itself would’ve been amazing. But Horowitz asks what happened to the possible GdT project. Goyer responded, saying there was “a lot going on with Lucasfilm at the time.”

Goyer did write the Vader Immortal VR experience, so he has been able to ‘dabble’ in the galaxy far, far away.

You can watch Goyer’s full interview with the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast below. (The “Star Wars” part is at timestamp 50:41.) Also, absolutely check out “Foundation” on Apple TV+.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
