Atari Reveals New Retro 2600+ Console Coming This Fall

Atari, the little company that changed the world, is releasing a new retro video game console. The Atari 2600+ is a modern-day recreation of the classic 1980 console. The company has partnered with PLAION to deliver this new release while staying faithful to the original.

At launch, the console will come with 10 of the most recognized Atari games. Modern technology has allowed the team to create an authentic replica of the original Atari 2600. So yes, it’s kind of an emulator, but it’s also NOT an emulator.

“Preserving classic games is a priority for Atari, and the release of the Atari 2600+ will make the hundreds of Atari 2600 and 7800 games that have been released over the last 50 years universally accessible,” Atari Chairman and CEO Wade Rosen said. “PLAION’s approach to a quality recreation of iconic Atari hardware has made them the perfect partner to bring the Atari 2600+ to market.”

Commercial Director of Retro at PLAION, Ben Jones, also praised the partnership, as they want to recreate the original thrill of playing the original games. “We’re excited to be working with Atari to bring back the Atari 2600 and help meet the growing consumer demand for retro hardware,” Jones said. “For gamers who remember the thrill of playing arcade games at home for the very first time, the Atari 2600+ will bring you right back. For everyone else, the offer is one of timeless fun and the chance to experience a golden age of video games in a way that could only come from Atari.”

The new CX40+ joystick even has the same layout as the original controller. The console will be backwards compatible with hundreds of the original Atari 2600 and 7800 games. PLAION and Atari will also be releasing the CX-30 Paddle Controller with a 4-in-1 game cartridge for $39.99. Additional CX40 joysticks will be available for $24.99.

As someone whose parents still have an original Atari 2600 console, this news is really pleasing. Children of the 70s and 80s can relive moments of their youth with a console compatible with modern TVs. If you have the funds to spare, I think this would be the perfect gift for under the tree.

The Atari 2600+ is looking at a worldwide launch on November 17th, 2023 for $129.99. Select stores are offering pre-order for the system now.
