Florida Woman Used Diet Mountain Dew to “Erase DNA” After Murder

A Florida woman is facing additional charges after attempting to erase evidence of murder by pouring Diet Mountain Dew over herself. Nichole Maks was in police custody under suspicion of murder of her roommate, 79-year-old Michael Cerasoli. She asked police for the soda, then “poured it all over herself,” attempting to scrub away any forensic evidence from her body. Daytona Police have added a “tampering with evidence” charge along with resisting arrest with violence and premeditated first-degree murder.

Cerasoli’s death was first noted on July 1st, after firefighters responded to a smoldering home at 1:46am. He was found lying facedown in a blood-splattered room. He suffered blunt force trauma to the head and stab wounds to the torso. Cerasoli’s landlord told police that Maks was his roommate, but she was nowhere to be found. Two cellphones were found near Carasoli’s body, one belonging to him, the other belonging to Maks. Maks’ phone had a bloodied knife balanced on top of it.

Maks was found less than two hours later, with a bloody leg, and was taken in for questioning. Police obtained a warrant to test the blood on Maks body, as she dodged the questioning. She then asked for a can of Diet Mountain Dew, which police obliged. Detectives attempted to take the drink away from Maks when she began to “procrastinate” with the can. Maks then poured the can all over her body and pulled away from officers, attempting to interfere with the possible evidence.

Florida residents have always been tied to crazy headlines that are so unbelievable, you just can’t help but read the story. However, this has to be one of the weirdest involving Mountain Dew [so far]. I have no idea how anyone could come up with an idea like that. Coincidentally, there was a recent study done by North Carolina State University, in which an ingredient found in Diet Mountain Dew was shown as being able to break down genetic material that makes up DNA.

Makis is being held in Volusia County Jail without bond and is scheduled for a court appearance on September 5th. Maybe she was just a big Lana Del Rey fan.
