A Quick Look into Different Tree Diseases to Protect Your Landscape

Having different tree species in the landscape can be advantageous for several reasons. While they increase curb appeal, they also promote a healthy environment around your property. Plus, something laden with colorful fruits, flowers, and leaves can quickly become a produce supplier for your kitchen. It’s a different type of fun to use home-grown ingredients in cooking. But trees need timely care and maintenance. Else, they can fall victim to diseases. A telltale sign can be spots on the tree bark or leaves. Instead of panicking, take quick corrective measures. Understand the cause of the problem to save your tree. Remove trees to save other property features if the damage is far from recovery.

Do you live in Gresham? In that case, you can look for Evergreen Landscape Care & Tree Services in Gresham. They offer different tree services to solve their customers’ problems. Before this, let’s find out common tree diseases and treatment choices.

    Rusty leaves

Do you notice reddish, orange, or golden spots on leaves? These can be due to the invasion of rust fungus, which is not fatal. The fungus can weaken trees’ health by interrupting the photosynthesis process. Scrape it off carefully if you see a powdery substance on mottled or faded leaves. You can also remove affected leaves from the tree. Fungicides can help with controlling the growth of rust fungi.

    Whitish powdery mildew

Humid, cloudy, and dry weather can lead to a whitish coating on the leaves. It can be due to powdery mildew caused by different fungi. This disease can make your plants’ leaves distorted. These can become red or yellow and even fall. During late fall, you can also notice minor black marks all over the white patches. Experts say choosing suitable shrubs and trees is essential to avoid this situation. For this reason, you can stay away from lilacs, crabapples, and crape myrtles. As for recovery, you can use a suitable fungicide.

    Canker

This tree disease can affect some parts of the branch or trunk. Trees suffer from this condition due to mechanical damage caused by lawnmowers or environmental factors like sunscald, frost cracks, etc. Bacteria and fungi can also be responsible. A young tree with smooth bark will often look discolored in the area affected by canker. Cankers can appear as tiny lesions on branches or a sizeable dead spot on the trunk. Young trees can die, while mature ones can become deformed. Fungi-led canker diseases occur in injured or distressed trees. Hence, maintaining their health is crucial. During dry climates, water them well. If you grow apple or maple trees, you would want to cover them in winter to save them from frost cracks and sunscald.

The infected branches need removal about 6-12 inches under the canker. One should also eliminate dying or dead branches. Pruning trees during winter and dry seasons will minimize the risk of contamination. If retrieving your tree’s health is impossible, call a tree care company immediately. Else, an unstable tree will be a hazard.

Local certified arborists can be your best guide about tree health. Get them to help you with your landscape.
