Everyone has a “coulda been” in their life, and Celine Song’s debut feature “Past Lives” is as thoughtful an exploration on that topic as we’ve seen. The film follows Nora and Hae Sung, two childhood friends growing up in South Korea. Their paths take a major divergence when Nora’s family immigrates to North America. Years later and through the connective power of the internet, they have the opportunity to reunite in person in New York City.

What unfolds is a beautiful and heartrending look at the people who come into our lives. Yet they may not be meant to stay there. Meditating on the concept of providence (or In-Yun in Korean), the film weaves together connections that are hard not to root for.
“Past Lives” succeeds at painting a hyper specific relationship. It’s aided by the limited scope of the tale, and relies on just three stars (and the younger counterparts for the two main friends). Teo Yoo (“Love to Hate You,” “Decision to Leave”) is the quiet Hae Sung. Greta Lee (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Russian Doll”) is the other half of the duo. As Nora she does an amazing job of embodying the dual culture nature of her character. Rounding out the trio of leads is John Magaro (“The Umbrella Academy,” “First Cow”) as Nora’s understanding and supportive husband, Arthur.
