Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Normal People“) is in talks to lead Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s upcoming film, “Twisters,” a reboot of the popular 1996 “Twister” tornado film. The project is being helmed by Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari“), and features a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, the writer behind the Oscar-winning film “The Revenant.”
Jan de Bont directed the original film, which boasted Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton in the starring roles. The story follows the duo as storm chasers caught up in a love triangle while facing off against rival chasers and a series of devastating tornadoes. The film grossed nearly $500 million worldwide and featured cutting-edge THX sound design.
Frank Marshall, known for his work on the “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” franchises, is producing the film through his banner. (The Kennedy/Marshall Company, which includes his wife Kathleen Kennedy, served as a lead producers on the original film.)
Warner Bros. Pictures will co-finance the project. Universal Pictures Executive VP of Production Sara Scott and creative executive Jacqueline Garell, along with Ashley Jay Sandberg from Kennedy/Marshall, will oversee the production of the film.
Reboot, Not a Sequel
The reboot is not a sequel and will introduce a “new chapter” to the story. Rumors suggest “Twisters” is an action-adventure film that highlights the true perils of storms of this magnitude. According to sources, our protagonist initially exhibits hesitancy owing to a prior experience. Nevertheless, despite holding a desk job after a life-threatening tornado encounter, Edgar-Jones’s character is compelled to return to storm chasing as a result of unforeseen events.
With a Golden Globe nomination, Edgar-Jones earned critical acclaim for “Normal People” and “Under the Banner of Heaven.” She is currently filming the feature adaptation “On Swift Horses.”
“Twisters” doesn’t currently have a release date, but we’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
