French director Quentin Dupieux– known for his offbeat films like “Rubber,” “Deerskin,” and “Mandibles“- is back with his latest project. “Smoking Causes Coughing” is a satirical take on the superhero genre. Judging by the official trailer, it promises to be a wild ride.

It follows a team of five superheroes collectively known as the Tobacco Force, comprised of Benzene (Gilles Lellouche), Nicotine (Anaïs Demoustier), Methanol (Vincent Lacoste), Mercury (Jean-Pascal Zadi), and Ammonia (Oulaya Amamra). The unlikely heroes must band together to save the world from Lézardin, Emperor of Evil, who threatens to destroy Earth.

The film promises to be a departure from traditional superhero movies, with its unconventional characters and absurd humor. Dupieux has made a name for himself with his unique cinematic style, and this one looks to be no exception. Surely, fans of Dupieux and those seeking a respite from the conventional superhero fare will be in for a treat.

After a fierce battle with a giant turtle, the Tobacco Force takes a mandatory retreat to strengthen their group cohesion. However, their peaceful retreat is disrupted when Lézardin launches his attack, thus forcing the heroes to spring into action.

The trailer showcases the film’s bizarre and comedic tone. Scenes of the heroes engaging in absurd battles, using unconventional tactics like cigarette smoke and lighters to fight their enemies.

Legendary cult filmmaker John Waters already praised the film. He described it as “one of the best movies of the year” and a “superhero movie for idiots.” We’re in!

“Smoking Causes Coughing” is set to release in theaters and on-demand March 31st, 2023.
