Irish Man Killed by ‘Violently Territorial’ Rooster

In April of 2022, an Irish man unfortunately lost his life. The culprit? A violently territorial rooster. This aggressive bird already had a history of violence. Jasper Kraus was tragically killed by a Brahma rooster that moved to his property after previously attacking a child. On April 28th, Kraus was fatally attacked by the rooster.

Corey O’Keefe, at tenant at Kraus’ home, was heading to bed after feeding the animals when he heard Kraus screaming for help. The scene O’Keefe came upon was horrific. A trail of blood leading into the house from the chicken coop, and pooling under Kraus from a deep puncture would in his calf.

O’Keefe called emergency services, and was talked through administering CPR for 25 minutes. Sadly, it wasn’t enough. Kraus was pronounced dead at the scene, having died from blood loss. It’s likely the rooster punctured his femoral artery. During the judicial inquiry, Kraus’ daughter said the rooster had ‘blood on its claws.’ The violent fowl itself had attacked her own daughter as well. Furthermore, Kraus continually repeated “rooster” as he dropped in and out of consciousness.

The coroner ultimately ruled that it was completely an accident. Tragic, but an accident nonetheless. Kraus’ daughter is frustrated by what she’s left with. Had this been a murder, she argues, there would have been a team in to help clean up the blood left behind. Instead, she’s left to clean up the mess by herself. So, not only has she lost her father, but has been made responsible to take care of what’s left behind.
