Releasing “Batgirl” Would Have ‘Hurt DC’ Says DC Studios

Yes, today is going to be VERY heavy on the DC Studios news. The reason? A press conference which laid out the first part of the relaunched DCEU. Called “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters,” think of this like how Marvel Studios does their phases. Co-heads of the newly launched DC Studios James Gunn and Peter Safran spoke about the big power players- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing- as well as tackling questions. Like wtf with “Batgirl” and “The Flash.”

“I saw the movie, and there are a lot of incredibly talented people in front of and behind the camera on that film. That film was not releasable,” Safran said. “I actually think that [David] Zaslav and the team made a very bold and courageous decision to cancel it because it would have hurt DC. It would have hurt those people involved.”

    Wow. That’s…a lot.

“I think that they really stood up to support DC. The characters, the story, the quality of all of that. I spoke to Adil [El Arbi] and Bilall [Fallah] — the directors — last week, we were chatting. We’d love to be in business with all those folks,” he continued. “Christina Hodson wrote it. Some people are already back in business with us. As I said, a lot of talented people were involved, but the film just was not releasable. It would not have been able to compete in the theatrical marketplace; it was built for the small screen. So, again, I think it was not an easy decision, but they made the right decision by shelving it.”

But don’t worry, we will likely eventually see the Batgirl in a future DC Studios project. “Batgirl’s a character that inevitably we will include in our story,” Safran said. Only time will tell.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
