Rep. Robert Garcia Sworn in With Superman #1 Comic

January 3rd is an important day in United States politics. Newly elected members of the House of Representatives are getting sworn in, as well as a big House vote. But, the big nerdy news today has to do with someone choosing a special text to be sworn in with.

Whomever is being sworn in to office gets to pick what text they lay their hand on. This is traditionally something like a holy book (bible, Koran, etc.), but occasionally there are uses of the US Constitution or articles of state from the Representative’s home turf. Federal News Network has a high res image of the table from this morning, actually. (See that here.)

Our favorite though, appeared today. That is an issue of Superman #1, first published in 1939, among the chosen texts. It was on loan from the Library of Congress.

No one is sure who chose the comic, but most think it’s newly elected House Rep Robert Garcia, former Mayor of Long Beach, CA.

    UPDATE:

    Yes, it was indeed Garcia!

Will be proudly sworn-in to Congress on the U.S. Constitution. Underneath the Constitution will be 3 items that mean a lot to me personally. A photo of my parents who I lost to covid, my citizenship certificate & an original Superman #1 from the @librarycongress. 🇺🇸😊 pic.twitter.com/YGW43OLsIp

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
