“Barbarella” Reboot to Star “Euphoria’s” Sydney Sweeney

A new “Barbarella” film is on the horizon over at Sony Pictures. Sydney Sweeney is set to star and executive produce. So far, there is no director/writer attached but we’re keeping our eyes peeled for any announcements. The Forrest Estate announced a plan for a reboot back in 2020, and now it’s moving forward with one of the biggest up-coming stars in the game.

Fitness icon and political activist Jane Fonda starred in the original 1968 film. Sweeney is best known for her work in Emmy-nominated “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus.” She’ll also be appearing in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man universe film, “Madame Web.”

As far as the film’s plot goes, we simply don’t know what route they will take it. The original film directed by Roger Vadim follows an astronaut from the 41st century. They set out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy. It’s then they meet Barbarella. The film was not a huge hit but has become something of a cult classic since.

Barbarella was created by Jean-Claude Forest for serialization in a French magazine. It became quite the scandal as it was one of the first “adult” comics. The character travels from planet to planet, meeting aliens and oftentimes having…relations with them. No word on if the great Duran Duran will use a new version of the excessive machine or not.

We’ll let you know what else we hear about this and other news. “Barbarella” is currently available to stream on Paramount+.
