“Smallville“‘s Clark Kent is heading to the world of the paranormal. Tom Welling has joined the cast of “The Winchesters” as Sam and Dean’s grandfather, Samuel Campbell. The “Supernatural” spin-off will follow the lives of the brothers’ parents, John Winchester and Mary Campbell. We’ll watch the story of their relationship unfold while hunting monsters in the 1970s. So break out the bellbottoms and the plaid trousers!

Samuel Campbell was originally played by Mitch Pileggi (“The X-Files“) in “Supernatural.” “The Winchesters” looks to cover the family line further back in time. So a younger man will play Mary’s protective, suspicious pops. Pileggi’s version of Samuel was a judgmental, reclusive hunter. With a dubious moral compass, he was often at odds with the Brothers Winchester. We’re interested to see what Welling’s performance might bring to the table. As Clark Kent, Welling is an optimist with a compassionate heart. His almost paternal concern for humans is evident. Perhaps we’ll see a Samuel Campbell with a bit more humanity injected into him. Though more than likely with an eye of suspicion directed at his daughter’s new beau.

Meg Donnelly, Bianca Kajilch, Jojo Fleites, and Drake Rodger also star. Jensen Ackles will reprise his role as Dean Winchester on the show. “Supernatural” continues to be The CW‘s most popular series. The network is anxious to fill the hole left by the series’ end in 2020 and are eager to keep the IP alive. So this announcement in an exciting forecast of what’s to come for “The Winchesters.”

The series premieres on The CW October 11th, 2022.
