New “Scooby-Doo” Film Confirms Velma’s Orientation

After years of fan speculation and hope, “Trick-or-Treat, Scooby-Doo” has finally revealed and made canon that yes, Velma is into girls! Clips from the film are rapidly peppering social media, featuring Velma going mushy over fashion designer Coco Diablo. This has been a long time coming. Both James Gunn and Tony Cervone had efforts thwarted in the past to portray the character thusly. But now it can be shouted from the rooftops that Velma IS gay!

In 2020 during Pride month, Cervone backed up what fans always knew, but never got to see. Gunn, director of the live-action films, wanted Velma to be gay in his 2001 film, only to be thwarted by rewrites that buried his attempt.

Given societal perceptions and restrictions in the past, it’s little wonder that Velma’s orientation could only be hinted at but never shown. Now there’s a greater openness in animated shows and television to represent LGBTQ characters. And with how adorably gaga Velma gets around Coco, it just makes us smile.

Needless to say, social media is exploding with clips and enthusiasm over the decision to finally give Velma the lady love she deserves. And it’s a big stride representation-wise. The Scooby-Doo franchise is over fifty years old and hasn’t ever deviated far from its original formula. For a character as iconic as Velma, it’s a welcome change to the group dynamic.

“Trick-or-Treat, Scooby-Doo” is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
