WE’VE GOT YOUR (FLUFFY) BACK – In Disney and Pixar’s all-new original feature film “Turning Red,” everything is going great for 13-year-old Mei—until she begins to “poof” into a giant panda when she gets too excited. Fortunately, her tightknit group of friends have her fantastically fluffy red panda back. Featuring the voices of Rosalie Chiang, Ava Morse, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Hyein Park as Mei, Miriam, Priya and Abby, “Turning Red” opens in theaters on March 11, 2022. © 2021 Disney/Pixar. Pixar’s “Turning Red” Skipping Theaters, Will Release on Disney+

Pixar’s latest film “Turning Red” will now be releasing on Disney+. Originally intended as a theatrical release, the studio announced today that they’ll be moving it onto their digital platform.

This is the third Pixar film in a row to see a release via Disney+. Starting with “Soul” in 2020 and “Luca” in 2021. As sad as we are not to see this film get a theatrical release (it seems TBD if it will play simultaneously), we applaud the decision to prioritize getting great content out to as wide an audience as possible.

GIANT PROBLEM – In Disney and Pixar’s all-new original feature film “Turning Red,” 13-year-old Mei Lee “poofs” into a giant panda when she gets too excited (which for a teenager is practically ALWAYS). Featuring Rosalie Chiang as the voice of Mei Lee, “Turning Red” opens in theaters on March 11, 2022. © 2021 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

Like the other Pixar Disney+ releases, the film will be available on the platform without any additional premium costs. Disney and their subsidiaries still seem to be figuring out different release models. The Disney Animation film “Raya and the Last Dragon” as well as the live action “Mulan” both were initially on Disney+ for $29.99.

Meanwhile Disney’s latest animated film “Encanto” saw a theatrical release, but was on Disney+ around a month later for no additional cost. Some of it feels like bad timing for the Pixar release windows correlating to Covid-19 surges, but there are definitely different philosophies at play.

Written and directed by Domee Shi, “Turning Red” centers around Meilin Lee. She’s a self confident music fan. who also happens to suffer from a family curse that turns her into a giant red panda when her emotions run high.

Pixar’s“Turning Red” will stream on March 11th 2022 on Disney+.
