Canadian startup Geometric Energy Corp. (GEC) has partnered with SpaceX to launch the first billboard into space. After the billboard is securely situated, anyone will be able to buy ad space with dogecoin.
This plan to have advertisements in space is one that GEC has in place to be available to anyone. Not just companies but also personal advertisements. That means if you want to propose from space you’ll be able to do it. Of course they won’t be disrupting regular night time viewing because the screen they will be using is 4 inches by 4 inches.
Samuel Reid, CEO and co-founder of GEC, told Business Insider they were in the process of building the CubeSat satellite.
One side of the satellite has a pixelated display screen where people can have their own designed adverts or messages shown. The attached selfie stick will then record and broadcast the message to a YouTube livestream.
GEC plan to load the CubeSat onto a SpaceX Falcon 9 next year which will drop it off in orbit before the rocket goes to the moon.
So while it’s not the future of “Blade Runner” quite yet, it does set a precedent for advertising from space. Surely after Geometric Energy Corp does this, other companies will want their own real-estate in space. And if they get bigger and more obtuse, then the night sky might be changing from the way we remember it.
