Whether you are a skilled professional with years of experience in data science or a fresher, you need to draft a stellar resume if you are looking for a new job.

Data science is a highly profitable and relevant career option in the 21st century. According to LinkedIn, Data Science is one of the 20 Fastest-Growing Jobs in the US. The demand for data scientists is rapidly increasing.

Data Science is considered one of the highest-paying jobs in today’s era. With the advancement of technology, the availability of data science jobs is also skyrocketing.

Making a resume can seem like a heavy task, especially if you have never made one before. This article will walk you through the essentials of creating an experienced and even an entry-level data science resume.

In this blog, we will discuss the following in detail:

    • What information should you put in the header section of your resume?
    • How to curate an engaging summary for a data science resume?
    • How to design the skills section of your data scientist resume?
    • How to present your work experience in your resume?
    • How to list your education qualification in your data scientist resume?

The Header Section of a Data Scientist Resume?

The header section of your resume is probably the most basic section of your resume, but it can cost you the job if not done right.

It is crucial to put the correct contact information in the header section for the recruiters to reach out to you. The Recruiter can contact you to seek further information about your candidacy or if you are shortlisted and they want to interview you.

Filling the wrong details can create more impact than you can think of. The header section of your resume includes the following information:

    • Your full name
    • Your Phone Number that is available 24/7
    • Your Professional Email Id
    • Your Location in City, Country Code format
    • The Job Title

Below is a snapshot of the header section from a data scientist resume:

Pro Tip: We also recommend you to add your LinkedIn URL but make sure that it is updated and add value to your resume.

    Summary for Data Scientist Resume?

Many people commit the mistake of writing a summary in a bullet form. A resume summary has to be written in a paragraph form not exceeding 3-4 lines.

Use the summary section to highlight the skills and expertise you have gained throughout your professional experience while establishing a cause and effect relationship in each line.

The summary is the first thing a recruiter will see, and therefore it is of paramount importance that you write a short & crisp summary demonstrating your career trajectory.

Below are a few tips to help you compose an engaging summary for your data scientist resume:

    • Start with total years of experience in the job market
    • Mention your qualification and certifications relevant to the target job profile
    • Focus more on data science methodologies and how you have used those skills to achieve results

Here’s a sample resume summary to help you craft an engaging summary for your Data Scientist resume:

The Skill Section of Data Scientist Resume?

The skills section of your resume showcases your ability to succeed in the job role. Therefore, your resume must have the skills the employer is looking for.

For your data scientist resume, make 2 separate sections to list your skills, namely:

    • Technical Skills: In this section, group all your technical skills under relevant subheadings like Languages, Software, Operating Systems, etc. You can create subheadings of your own, but the basic idea should remain the same.
    • Key Skills: In the key skills section, include all your non-technical expertise like Data Analysis, Data Visualization, Data Mining, Database Management, Project Management, Team Leadership, etc. Add the skills that you can substantiate in your professional experience section.

Read the job description carefully while curating the skill section for your resume. Look for keywords in the job description and analyze your professional experience and qualification and add the common skills.

Adding keywords in your resume is important to make your resume ATS-friendly. According to Jobscan.Co, 98% of fortune 500 companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to review your resume.

With that being said, ensure that your resume includes the skills and qualifications that the recruiter is seeking but make sure that you add only valid information.

Below is a snapshot of data science skills segregated into the Technical & Key skills section:

How to List Your Professional Experience on Resume?

Use reverse chronological order to write your professional experience section, which means writing the most recent profile in terms of dates first and then dating back to the oldest one in

The recruiters don’t have time to read your list of roles and responsibilities you have held in all the organizations you have with. Therefore, it is important that you can convey your skills and achievements in the minimum time possible.

Below are a few tips to grab the recruiter’s attention in the minimum time possible.

    • List your key contributions and achievements in a one-liner bullet format, each point starting with a power verb.
    • Quantify the information by providing numbers wherever possible to demonstrate the impact of your contribution
    • Highlight important words and numbers throughout relevant to the targeted job profile
    • Group similar points together and make a subheading for the same like Data Mining, Issue Resolution, etc. This helps you showcase your broad-level skills.

Here’s an example of how you can design your professional experience for your data scientist resume.

How Should You List Your Education on a Resume?

Mention your education details in chronological order with the name of the degree, educational institution, time period, and location.

Usually, the professional experience section is ordered before the education section, but if you are a fresher, your education details are mentioned below the skills section.

If you have experience of over 3 years, you can omit to mention 10th and 12th in your resume.

Below is a screenshot of the education section

    Conclusion

We hope that our resume guide helps your resume-making process easier. Ensure that you proofread all the information before sending it to the recruiter to avoid silly grammatical or spelling mistakes.

Let us do a quick roundup so that you don’t miss out on any crucial details:

    • Ensure that you add correct contact details in the header section of your resume
    • Write the summary in a 3-4 lines paragraph and not bullet form
    • List down skills relevant as per job requirement
    • Quantify the bullet points in the professional experience section to showcase the impact of your contribution.
