Jesus is coming! There is a new sculpture underway that’s bigger than the iconic Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. This new statue in Brazil is going to be an estimated 16 feet taller than Rio’s.
A Brazilian organization called the Friends of Christ Association is leading the project in southern Brazil. This statue will also have arms outstretched. They are calling it Christ the protector. The statue is being built in Encantado, a small town in Brazil’s southernmost state, Rio Grande do Sul.
The entire estimated cost is around $353,000 and the organization building it is asking for donations. This will be the third largest Jesus statue in the world coming after a 249-foot statue currently under construction in Mexico and a 172-foot monument in Poland.
Sculptor Genésio Gomes Moura and his son, Markus Moura are the artists on the project. They will have it completed sometime this year and intend to boost tourism with the piece. Inside the statue will be an elevator. The elevator will take you up to Jesus’ heart level and let you overlook the landscape.
