Nintendo has confirmed that 300,000 accounts have been compromised. They have upped their number after it was originally reported that only 160,000 accounts had been compromised. On the Nintendo Japan support page it says that since these accounts have been breached they have reset the passwords and notified the owners.

Users complained of missing funds from their Nintendo account. In some cases they reported that their funds were being used to buy Fortnite’s V-Bucks. Fortunately Nintendo is refunding all the disputed transactions on the hacked accounts by depositing the funds back into their Paypal or linked bank accounts.

Nintendo has stated that it wasn’t a security breach of on their end. The information was acquired by other means. With now 300,000 breached accounts Nintendo is estimating that less than 1% of accounts have been illegally logged onto.

Nintendo has warned people that whoever breached these accounts were able to see people’s nicknames, date of birth, country/region, as well as email address. They also recommend changing your passwords to your linked email for extra protection.

“We sincerely apologize to our customers and related parties for any inconvenience and concern. In the future, we will make further efforts to strengthen security and ensure safety so that similar events do not occur,” Nintendo said in an announcement.

Following these events Nintendo has stated that they are taking this very seriously and are recommending that people use a two-factor authentication on their accounts. If you haven’t been contacted by Nintendo about the breach your account is fine and there is no need to worry.
