An Accident Caused Red Wine to Flow From Faucets in an Italian Town

In the northern Italian town of Castelvetro something magical happened. Instead of water pouring from facets instead red wine ran freely. Was this an act of God or an incredibly funny accident. Well it of course turned out to be the latter but for while, if you lived in the town you could get free ready to be bottled red wine delivered right from your tap.

A malfunction at a local winery caused 1,000 liters of ready-to-be-bottled wine to leak into the water pipes. The glitch lasted about three hours and impacted about 20 homes, said Giorgia Mezzacqui, deputy mayor of Castelvetro, about 10 miles south of Modena.

While it didn’t pose any health risks it certainly brightened a lot of peoples’ days. Especially if you hopped into the shower thinking you were going to get ready for the day. Red wine tends to stain…

    What Happened?

Well according to CNN who was able to talk to the Cantina Settecani winery it all had to do with a faulty valve. Because the valve was broken Lambrusco Grasparossa, a local specialty, seeped through the town’s water lines due to its pressure. Many of the townspeople called the distillery to let them know of the issue and that they were bottling the wine!

When you live in a small community things like this are really fun and amazing. Everyone in town got a good laugh about it.

While in the midst of the current Coronavirus catastrophe the people needed a lift in spirits. And ironically spirits is just what they got. “At a time where we have very little to smile about, I’m glad we brought some levity to others,” Mezzacqui told CNN. “Hopefully some day they’ll remember us and will want to come visit us.”
