This morning, trainers were introduced to the newest Nintendo title to receive an updated Switch port—Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX!

    What is Pokemon Mystery Dungeon?

In 2006, Nintendo released a pair of games called Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue team & Blue Rescue team in NA. Red Rescue Team was released on the Gameboy Advance, and Blue Rescue Team on the Nintendo DS, boasting better graphics and use of the dual screen function of the DS. Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX will likely be a single standalone game that features all Pokemon from Blue & Red rescue team.

Similar to the main line Pokemon games, these two featured a handful of exclusive Pokemon per game. Unlike the main line of Pokemon games however, these were developed by Chunsoft, a team known for various game series but most notably here their Mystery Dungeon Games. These games were originally inspired by Rogue, a classic roguelike title that paved the way for mechanics used in many of todays indie RPGs, and even some mainstream games.

    How do they play?

Mystery Dungeon and roguelike games are RPGs at heart that generally follow the same rule: Challenging the player through dungeon exploration, puzzles, and randomly generated dungeon floors all while taking into account that the enemies (and sometimes hazards) take a turn when the player does. This often leads to a chess-like strategy of planning your moves ahead of time, so as to not walk right into an enemy’s attack, or get yourself cornered. Some of the older, hardcore roguelikes included permadeath, but many of today’s roguelikes or “roguelites” omit permadeath for a less punishing game experience.

Releases March 6th, 2020 for the Switch

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX releases on March 6th, 2020, but you can head to the eShop right now for the demo (and to pre order)! Progress carries over into the final game, what are you waiting for?
