According to Movieweb, Universal has finally set a release date for the movie version of Wicked for December 22, 2021.

While previously slated to debut in December this year, instead that slot has been given to the movie version of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Cats, which is currently in production. This continues a trend by Universal in releasing musicals in December, with Cats scheduled for 2019, Sing 2 scheduled for 2020, and now Wicked scheduled for 2021.

Wicked the Broadway musical is based on the 1993 book by Gregory Maguire: Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The book was a retelling of the L. Frank Baum 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which was later adapted to screen as The Wizard of Oz in 1939. Wicked is from the perspective of the witches of Oz and tells the story of the Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (Glinda the Good Witch) and their friendship. It starts before and continues after Dorothy’s arrival in the land of Oz as seen in Wizard of Oz.

Wicked first premiered on Broadway in 2003 and by July 2017 had become Broadway’s second highest earning show and in July 2018 became Broadway’s 6th longest running show. No cast for the movie has been announced, but we will be excited to see this play come to the big screen.

Are you going to see this when it comes out? Did you see the play? Tell us in the comments!

I am still waiting for that blue police box to take me on a star trek to a galaxy far, far away. Until then I will have to content myself with fantasy and sci-fi adventures from books, movies, and TV shows.
