7 Tips to Start Small Scale Manufacturing in 2021

Starting a business is a very popular way for people to make a living in 2021. In fact, people are starting more and more new businesses, and we expect this to continue. There are many different kinds of businesses that can be started.

One industry that offers a lot of variety and potential is small scale manufacturing. There are dozens of different options here for people with a variety of different passions, interests and goals.

Whatever you decide to manufacture, you want to ensure you are getting your business started off on the right foot. With that in mind, this blog post is going to go over a few tips to start small scale manufacturing in 2021.

    Do Your Research

First up, you need to do your research. You need to ensure your idea is viable, and people are interested in it. You should also see who else is manufacturing the things you are thinking about, and identify if there is room in the space for you. Whether you want to do MDF engraving, or create items from steel, you need to ensure there is a market for what you are manufacturing, or this could turn into a very expensive hobby.

Have the Right Tools, Expertise and Experience

Of course, before you start manufacturing anything, you need to ensure you are prepared to do so. This includes having the right tools, expertise and experience in place. You should be knowledgeable about the steps taken to create your product, and have the skills (or know someone who does) to complete those steps. If you try to do things without knowing how, it can be dangerous and expensive.

    Start With Your Product Design

Creating a design is always the first step when it comes to manufacturing any product. There are several computer programs that allow you to create a virtual model of your product, and figure out exactly what size it will be, the materials you will use, and how it should be built. If you try to create a product without a design, even if it is simple, there is a good chance you will fail.

Know How Much Money You’ll Need

No matter what business you want to start, there will likely be some money required to get it off the ground. Before you start, it is wise to familiarize yourself with the costs involved and make sure you can afford it. If you cannot, take time to decide how you are going to get the money. This could be from a loan, selling your items, taking on investment or attempting to crowdfund.

    Make all Necessary Safety Considerations

Manufacturing can be a dangerous industry at times. There is often a lot of cutting, welding, and many jobs include the use of heavy materials or tools. So before you begin to manufacture a single thing, ensure you are taking every security precaution. This goes not only for keeping individuals safe, but also your warehouse/workspace. Sure, this can take more time to ensure everything is safe, but it is incredibly important.

Think Hard About Who You Hire

Your manufacturing company will often live or die depending on who you hire. The right team can propel your business to success, while hiring the wrong people can doom it from the start. The people you hire should be skilled, experienced and share the values you hold. They should take direction well, be willing to learn and always keep safety in mind. All it takes is one wrongly-built product to ruin your reputation, so ensure everyone on your team is up to the task and on the same page.

    Don’t Forget to Network

Oftentimes in business, it is about who you know, not what you know. So once you begin manufacturing, or even beforehand, it is a good idea to make some connections. These could be some partners, suppliers, customers or any other company or individual that could help your cause at some point.

In conclusion, these seven tips should help you greatly when it comes to small scale manufacturing in 2021.
