How to Keep Your Security Qualifications Up to Date in the UK

Keeping SIA qualifications current means tracking four separate expiry dates, not one: your licence, your first aid certificate, your sector refresher, and any additional sector badge you hold. They run on different clocks. Officers who treat the licence expiry as the only date in the diary are the ones who end up off the rota for a fortnight while paperwork catches up.

    Four dates, four different clocks

A front line SIA licence lasts three years from the date it is granted. Emergency First Aid at Work lasts three years from the date it was issued, usually weeks or months before the licence. A second sector badge, added later at the discounted £102, expires on its own schedule rather than syncing with the first.

Two cycles in and those dates can sit six months apart. Put all four in a phone calendar with a five-month warning on each. That single habit prevents most of the problems described in the rest of this piece.

    The training requirement keeps moving

Renewal requirements have changed twice since 2021, and experienced officers often assume this cycle matches the last one. April 2021 made a first aid qualification a prerequisite for licence-linked training. In October 2021, top-up training became a renewal requirement. April 2025 replaced top-up with refresher training for door supervisors and security guards, and close protection joined the refresher requirement on 1 April 2026.

People still book what they call door supervisor top up training, and the course that search now leads to is the two-day refresher that replaced it. People use the names interchangeably in conversation. The SIA does not treat them interchangeably, and a genuine top-up certificate from 2023 no longer supports a renewal application.

Checking your SIA online account before booking anything is the reliable move. It shows what your sector currently requires, not what it required when you last renewed.

First aid drifts out of sync

EFAW is the date that catches most people, because it is the one nobody writes down. Training centres commonly require 12 months or more remaining on the certificate at enrolment, so a first aid qualification with eight months left blocks a refresher booking even though it is technically still valid.

Rebooking first aid a year before it expires solves the drift permanently. One day, £60 to £150, and it resets a clean three years that sits comfortably ahead of the next licence renewal. Officers who let it run to the wire end up paying for a same-week course at whatever price is available locally.

Anyone returning to the industry after a break faces a different question. Depending on how long the gap ran, the SIA can require the full licence-linked qualification rather than a refresher, so booking SIA door supervisor training from scratch becomes the route back rather than a two-day top-up. My Badge lists both the full six-day course and the refresher with the prerequisites shown against each, which makes the comparison straightforward for anyone unsure which category they fall into.

Adding sectors while you are already current

Second sector licences cost 50% of the standard fee for eligible applicants, bringing an additional badge down to £102. CCTV alongside door supervision is the most common pairing, and it changes the shape of the working week by opening control room and monitoring shifts that run through weekdays rather than clustering on Friday and Saturday nights.

Public space CCTV carries no first aid prerequisite, so the additional qualification runs for about three days with no bundled EFAW cost. Close protection sits at the other end at 14 days or more and now carries its own refresher requirement from April 2026.

Timing the addition matters more than the choice. Adding a sector shortly after a renewal gives you close to three clear years on both badges before either needs attention, while adding one 18 months in creates a permanently staggered pair.

Counter-terrorism training is becoming a standing expectation

ACT Awareness e-learning through ProtectUK is free and takes under an hour, and some local authority licensing conditions already name it directly for on-duty door supervisors and managers. The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 received Royal Assent on 3 April 2025, the Home Office published its section 27 statutory guidance in April 2026, and commencement is expected around 2027.

Venue operators are not waiting. Enhanced-tier premises are writing counter-terrorism training into staffing requirements now, meaning officers who complete the e-learning and keep the certificate already meet a condition other applicants have not considered. Refresh it annually. The content updates, and a 2023 completion certificate carries less weight than a recent one.

    Keep your own records

Employers under the Approved Contractor Scheme audit training records rather than accepting a photo of a badge. BS 7858 vetting covers five years of employment history, so the file follows you between contractors and gaps in it slow every new deployment.

Keep a folder, digital or paper, holding your licence details, current first aid certificate, refresher certificate, ACT completion, and contact details for every employer across the last five years. Officers who can send that in one email get cleared for work in days. Those who reconstruct it from memory wait weeks, and agencies fill the shift with whoever answered first.

Budget for the cycle, not the year

Across three years the maintenance cost sits at roughly £204 for the licence, £150 to £300 for refresher training, and £60 to £150 for first aid if it falls due in the same window. That is a manageable figure spread across 36 months and an unpleasant one landing in a single fortnight.

Set aside a small amount monthly, and the renewal stops being an event. It becomes a booking.
