At some point, every iPhone battery starts to fail. It’s not a defect. It’s physics. Lithium-ion cells have a finite number of charge cycles before their capacity degrades, and Apple designs its phones around an assumption that the battery will be in good condition. When it isn’t, the effects show up in ways that feel like the phone is failing when it’s actually just the battery: shorter time between charges, unexpected shutdowns at 20 or 30 percent, slower performance because the phone is throttling the processor to compensate for a battery that can’t deliver consistent power.
The good news is that this is one of the more straightforward repairs in modern smartphone maintenance. The more important question isn’t whether to replace the battery, but how to make sure the replacement is done in a way that solves the problem rather than creating new ones.
How to Know If Battery Replacement Is Actually What You Need
Before spending money on a replacement, confirming that the battery is genuinely the issue is worth doing. iPhones make this reasonably easy.
Go to Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health and Charging. The Maximum Capacity figure tells you what percentage of the original capacity the battery currently holds. Apple’s general guidance is that an iPhone battery is designed to retain up to 80 percent of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under normal conditions. A battery sitting at 76 percent with noticeable charging and performance issues is a clear case for replacement. A battery at 88 percent where the phone is behaving normally probably isn’t the problem and replacing it won’t change anything.

There are three realistic paths for iPhone battery replacement: Apple directly, an authorised service provider, and an independent repair shop. They have meaningfully different trade-offs.
Apple’s own repair service uses genuine Apple batteries and the work comes with Apple’s warranty. For a phone still under warranty or covered by AppleCare+, this is usually the right choice because the cost may be covered or substantially reduced. For out-of-warranty phones, Apple charges a service fee that’s typically in the range of $69 to $99 depending on the model, plus labour if additional issues are found. The experience is reliable, but appointment availability and turnaround time vary by location.
Authorised Apple Service Providers use Apple-certified parts and follow Apple’s repair protocols, which means they can access Apple’s calibration and diagnostic systems in the same way Apple’s own technicians can. The pricing tends to be similar to Apple’s, and the work is typically covered by a warranty.
Independent repair shops are the most price-variable option. Cost can be significantly lower than Apple’s service fee, and turnaround is often faster. The critical variable is battery quality, which varies considerably between independent repair shops depending on what parts they source. A shop using a low-quality replacement battery may produce a repair that costs less initially but results in a battery that degrades faster, doesn’t hold charge accurately, or in worst cases causes charging problems that weren’t present before the repair.
What Makes a Good Replacement Battery
The battery quality question is where the best iPhone battery replacement decisions get made or missed, and it’s worth understanding what the relevant specifications actually are.
Capacity is the starting point, usually expressed in milliampere-hours. A replacement battery for a specific iPhone model should match or exceed the capacity of the original battery for that model. A battery that’s listed at a significantly lower mAh rating than the original will produce shorter battery life even when new.
Semi-solid-state battery technology, as used in DEJI batteries, represents a meaningful advancement over older lithium-ion formulations. Where conventional lithium-ion batteries use a liquid electrolyte, semi-solid-state designs use a gel or semi-solid electrolyte that improves stability, reduces the risk of electrolyte leakage, and allows for higher energy density in the same physical form factor. For a replacement battery that needs to fit within the original iPhone chassis dimensions, higher energy density means more capacity without compromise on size.
Diagnostic compatibility matters in a way that has become more relevant as Apple has tightened the software integration of its batteries. iPhones can detect when a non-genuine battery is installed and will display a service message in Battery Health settings indicating that the battery can’t be verified. This doesn’t affect function, but it’s visible in the Battery Health screen and will persist until the battery data is calibrated. Ask what brand of replacement battery they use and what the mAh rating is for your specific iPhone model. A shop that can answer this specifically is working with proper parts. One that’s vague about battery source should prompt more caution.
Ask about the warranty on the battery and the labour. A reputable repair shop stands behind its work with at least a 90-day warranty on both the part and the repair. Some offer longer warranties, particularly shops that source from quality battery manufacturers.
Ask whether the battery will trigger any service messages in Battery Health settings. With older replacement batteries, this was unavoidable. With newer batteries that include proper diagnostic compatibility, it isn’t, and a shop using quality parts will be able to tell you whether this is something to expect.
After the Replacement
Once the battery is replaced, there are a few things that help it calibrate correctly and give accurate readings in Battery Health.
Running the battery down to near-zero and then charging fully to 100 percent a couple of times after a replacement helps the phone establish an accurate baseline for the battery’s capacity. Battery Health readings immediately after a replacement sometimes don’t reflect the actual capacity of the new battery until this calibration has happened.
Avoid keeping the phone at 100 percent for extended periods and avoid regular deep discharge below around 10 percent, both of which accelerate long-term degradation in lithium-ion chemistry. Normal everyday charging habits, plugging in at the end of the day rather than waiting for the phone to die, are generally fine.
A properly replaced battery in a well-maintained iPhone should restore the phone to something close to its original performance and charge retention. That’s the outcome worth aiming for, and it’s entirely achievable with the right battery, the right repair, and a shop that knows what they’re doing.
