Macaulay Culkin Has a Story Pitch for “Home Alone” Sequel

35 years later, actor Macaulay Culkin is still best known for playing Kevin McCallister in Chris Columbus’s “Home Alone.” Aside from returning for the 1992 follow-up “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” he has spent decades trying to distance himself from the franchise.

But now, Culkin says he’d be open to coming back.

During his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” tour, he said he “wouldn’t be completely allergic” to returning for a sequel. “It would have to be just right.”

Culkin even pitched what the right story might look like.

    More “Home Alone“?

“I kind of had this idea. I’m either a widower or a divorcee,” he said. “I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me.”

Swapping the robbers in the first film for a loving father just trying to connect with his son seems like a pretty good “Home Alone” continuation.

“[T]he house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship,” Culkin added. To “get let back into son’s heart’ kind of deal. That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have. I’m not completely allergic to it, the right thing.”

1997’s “Home Alone 3,” 2002’s made-for-TV reboot, and 2021’s “Home Sweet Home Alone,” all failed to perform with fans and critics. So it’s hard to say how much a studio would want to invest in a franchise with such lopsided returns.

There is currently no news to suggest a “Home Alone” sequel is in the works at this time. But if Culkin were on board, that could certainly change things. We’ll keep you posted on updates if/when a sequel is greenlit.
