Denise Gough to be ‘Mean to Kids’ in Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia”

“Andor” star Denise Gough just confirmed being cast in Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia” film. She can’t spill the beans on which role she will play in the upcoming film, but she did drop a pretty big hint.

This adaptation is based on the 1955 novel “Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew,” the first of C.S. Lewis’ beloved series. Gerwig (“Barbie“), a 4-time Oscar nominee, is set to direct the first two films in a “Narnia” franchise for Netflix.

“I’m doing a film with Greta Gerwig called Narnia,” Gough said on the “We’re Not Kidding with Mehdi & Friends” podcast. “So that’s, I’m playing someone mean in that, but it’s fine, it’s to children, it’s okay.”

Well, the meanest character would be Jadis, the White Witch, but they are already being played by Emma Mackey. Fans are speculating she means Aunt Letty, which would be a smaller role, but still full of sass.

Gough will star alongside Mackey, Beatrice Campbell as Polly Plummer, and Oscar-nominated Carey Mulligan as Digory’s mother.

“Narnia” will be scored by Mark Ronson, who is also the son-in-law of Meryl Streep. This gives some credit to rumors she’ll play Aslan, but there is nothing solid at this time.

The project began shooting in London in August, and has already been spotted in Bank Station and The Royal Exchange. It seems that Gerwig’s adaptation will be set in the 1950s, which is a few decades after Lewis’s setting. This is incredibly common with film adaptations, but it will mean later installments will also be more modernized.

“Narnia” is currently slated for release in IMAX and on Netflix sometime around the end of 2026. We’ll keep you posted on updates as the project develops.
