Understanding A2P Registration & The Campaign Registry: What Your Business Needs to Know

If your business sends text messages to customers—whether it’s appointment reminders, marketing updates, or customer support—you’re likely using Application-to-Person (A2P) messaging. With rising concerns around spam and fraudulent SMS, mobile carriers and regulatory bodies are tightening controls to protect consumers. One major step in this process is A2P 10DLC registration through The Campaign Registry (TCR).

But what does this mean for your business? And how can you stay compliant while continuing to reach your audience via SMS?

    Let’s break it down.

    What Is A2P Messaging?

A2P stands for Application-to-Person messaging. It’s any kind of text message sent from a software application (like your CRM, marketing platform, or scheduling tool) to a person. This is different from P2P (Person-to-Person) texting, which is what we all do with our phones daily.

    Businesses use A2P to:

    • Send promotional offers
    • Confirm appointments
    • Deliver reminders or alerts
    • Provide two-factor authentication codes

Because A2P traffic is automated and high-volume, carriers want to ensure it’s legitimate, consent-based, and not abusive.

    Enter: The Campaign Registry (TCR)

The Campaign Registry is a centralized hub where businesses must register their A2P 10-digit long code (10DLC) messaging campaigns. TCR works with mobile carriers to ensure transparency, improve deliverability, and reduce spam by vetting the sender and the type of messages being sent.

    Why You Need to Register

As of recent regulations, U.S. mobile carriers require A2P 10DLC registration for businesses using SMS platforms. If you’re sending messages without being registered:

    • You risk message filtering or blocking
    • You may face hefty surcharges
    • Your SMS provider might suspend your account

In short: Registering ensures your messages are delivered reliably, affordably, and legally.

    How A2P Registration Works

    Here’s the basic process:

    1. Brand Registration
You’ll register your business (the “brand”) with The Campaign Registry. This includes your legal business name, EIN, industry, and contact info.
    2. Campaign Registration
You’ll then register each type of message you send—called a “campaign.” For example: appointment reminders, marketing messages, customer support texts.
    3. Approval and Vetting
TCR and the carriers assess your brand and campaigns. Based on your use case and industry, you’ll be assigned a “trust score” that affects message throughput and deliverability.
    4. Assigning Numbers
Once approved, you link your registered campaigns to your SMS-enabled phone numbers.

    Benefits of Registering with TCR

    ✅ Higher message deliverability
    ✅ Lower per-message carrier fees
    ✅ Compliance with carrier regulations
    ✅ Improved consumer trust
    ✅ Avoid penalties and suspensions

    Common Questions

Do I need to register if I only send a few messages per month?
Yes, if you’re sending A2P messages via 10DLC, registration is still required—even for low-volume use.

Can my SMS platform handle this for me?
Most SMS providers will walk you through the registration process or handle it on your behalf. Check with your provider for specifics.

    What if I don’t register?
You may still be able to send messages, but they’re likely to be filtered, delayed, or blocked—and you’ll be charged higher carrier fees.

    Final Thoughts

A2P registration via The Campaign Registry might feel like a hurdle, but it’s a vital step to maintain trust and reliability in your business communication. If you’re unsure whether your current messaging setup is compliant, reach out to your SMS provider—or consult with a messaging compliance expert.

Stay proactive, protect your brand reputation, and ensure your messages continue reaching your audience.
