Shawn Levy Promises “Deadpool 3” to Retain R-Rated Series Style

Director Shawn Levy confirmed several exciting things about the long-awaited “Deadpool 3.” This will be a huge addition to not only the “Deadpool” films but to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as a whole. It has already been confirmed Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) will be paired with X-Men fan favorite Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). This will mark Deadpool’s first Marvel Studios outing, and will hopefully start a more cohesive blending of properties. [We don’t talk about “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”]

But this has caused fans to worry. Deadpool’s over-the-top sense of humor and violence may get toned down since he is playing in a bigger (Disney-owned) sandbox. Levy assures fans the franchise will keep its R-rated violence. He even went so far as to explain how this particular film is a bit of a do-over for him. “One of the few regrets in my career is that I got strong-armed into recutting ‘The Internship’ from an R to a PG-13,” Levy said. “I still regret it because the R-rated version of Vince [Vaughn] and Owen [Wilson] in ‘The Internship’ was way better. And the me of today would not have succumbed like the me of 20, whatever, 12 years ago.”

The director understands fan’s connection to the character, too. “Developing a ‘Deadpool’ movie is one of the most fun creative experiences of my life because it’s not just that it’s rated R. It’s that it’s so filled with self-awareness, and that makes in-writing very, very fun in a way that is unique to that franchise,” Levy continued. “It’s also a North Star priority for Ryan and I to keep Deadpool raw, gritty, grounded in the ways that those movies have been and that all of us love.”

Levy is also backed up by some comments “Deadpool 1-3” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick made earlier this year. “They are gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool, you know?” the pair said. “It’s not like any particular joke may be the one that they say, ‘You know, that’s too far,’ that could happen, but to this point, it’s been nothing but support.” We’d also like to remind fans that this was the same set of concerns people had about the first film, which ended up hitting the mark for most Deadpool die-hards.

He also [sort of] confirmed when they would begin filming. When asked if shooting would start in May, he responded “On or about. Yep.” Levy explained how the start date isn’t really set yet. “The truth is the more digitally CG-heavy a movie is, the longer time you need in post. But obviously it’s the first Deadpool movie in the MCU. There’s going to be no lack of visual effects.”

“Deadpool 3” currently has a release date of November 8th, 2024. We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
