A Look At The Rise In Hybrid Gaming

Even though handhelds like the PlayStation Portable had similar features, the Nintendo Switch was regarded as the first hybrid gaming console. Surrounding its release, multiple gaming, and entertainment companies have successfully raised capital in Series A funding rounds to further explore the potential of hybrid gaming.

In April 2021, Multiverse, Inc. raised more than $17 million in its Series A funding round led by Anthos Capital. This investment went towards the digital gaming developer’s platform, One More Multiverse. The hybrid gaming platform, which is still only available in closed beta, is free-to-play and merges elements of video games with tabletop role-playing games.

One year later, PortalOne raised $60 million in its Series A funding round to continue developing its immersive hybrid gaming platform, signaling the increased interest in this style of gaming.

    Hybrid Gaming Has Arrived

The Switch was released in March 2017, and people can use the device at home or portably to play many different games. Since its release, several hybrid consoles have followed. There are rumors that Apple is exploring the possibility of releasing a Nintendo Switch-style hybrid game console, which would send ripples through the gaming equipment market.

Apart from consoles and platforms, hybrid genres are popular in the gaming industry. If you enjoy horror-themed games in addition to action, role-playing, and survival, the survival horror genre is designed for this interest. Today, you will also find that many video games take inspiration from other genres and franchises. For example, there are many similarities between Elden Ring and Dark Souls, despite Elden Ring taking place in a different universe.

Even the online gambling industry has embraced this style of gaming. There are many hybrid casino games, such as Slingo, which combines video slots with bingo. Most online casinos today are also hybrid platforms, such as those in the online gambling Canada market. This is because these casinos not only allow gamers to play live games that use real dealers and traditional table games like blackjack that use an RNG, but also access odds on trending sports like football, hockey, and basketball. These platforms also offer rewards like welcome bonuses and betting guides. This way, people don’t have to use one platform for casino games and another for sports betting.

Another example of how hybrid entertainment is rising in popularity today is streaming giant Netflix adding mobile games to its platform. Last year, Netflix rolled out five games, including one based on its hit original show Stranger Things. For now, Netflix’s game selection is minimal (five at the time of launch), but you can access them on your mobile device when you feel like taking a break from watching movies and TV.

Tomorrow, Netflix Games will start rolling out on the Netflix mobile app. First on Android, with iOS on the way.

Advancements in technologies like smartphones have made it easier to only use one device for multiple purposes, including banking and shopping. The gaming industry is taking advantage of this by rolling out hybrid gaming platforms, which you can see in the Canadian and global gambling markets since operators offer both casino games and sports betting in one digital location.
