More than five decades after his death, Jimi Hendrix is still shaping the way we celebrate music. New York City has found a way to keep him in the spotlight in a new tribute to the rock legend. A section of West Eighth Street in Greenwich Village will soon be co-named Jimi Hendrix Way. The tribute honors the legendary guitarist’s impact on rock music and his ties to the neighborhood. As someone who grew up loving anything from the 60’s and 70’s his music means a lot to me. And I know that many others feel the same way. His influence lives on as many musicians state he is an inspiration and a pillar of the music community.
Where the street will be is not accident either. Greenwich Village played a major role in Hendrix’s rise. Being home to Electric Lady Studios. For those that don’t know, it’s the recording studio he opened in 1970. This street naming celebrates his his connection to New York City.
Support for the tribute has come from his sister Janie Hendrix and musician Stevie Van Zandt. In addition to the tribute they are trying to highlight how important music is in education.
Usually street co-naming in New York City signifies major cultural icons. Hendrix clearly fits that category. His guitar techniques were nothing short of legendary.
The ceremony will take place on the corner of West Eighth Street and Sixth Avenue at 11 a.m. on Feb. 24.
