6 Top ‘Nerdy’ Hobbies Anyone Could Enjoy

Hobbies have been popular for as long as anyone can remember, with countless types of hobbies coming and going. Many of these have been spread across the same areas, like playing sports or learning to play an instrument. That doesn’t mean these are interesting to everyone.

It’s natural to want to consider ‘nerdy’ hobbies, as you could end up enjoying these a whole lot more than others.

With each of these in mind, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t put a little time and effort into them. But, this begs the question as to which hobbies are actually worth it. But, a few of them could stand out more than others, as they could be a lot more interesting and offer their own benefits, with six of them standing out.

They’ll each offer their pros and cons, so there’s no reason not to try them.

    1. Video Games

Video games are one of the more obvious choices you can go for, as they’ve been one of the most popular hobbies on the planet. It’s easy to see why so many people go for this, as it offers more than a few benefits, and it can be one of the funner picks to go for. You’ll even have countless games to pick from.

These range from relatively simple games like Wordle and The Sims to something more complicated, like the X-Com franchise. Many of these can be more than worth trying.

This could take a bit more of an upfront investment than some other options, however. You’ll need to invest in a PC or console, as well as the games themselves, for example. Thankfully, getting these second-hand is quite affordable, and they’ll be of a higher quality than you would’ve thought.

    2. Tabletop Games

Speaking of games, video games are far from the only option you have. You can also go for tabletop games, which have been popular for decades and have even offered more than a bit of inspiration for their more modern counterparts. The likes of Dungeons & Dragons is one of the more notable options for this.

But, you’ll have plenty of others if the fantasy genre isn’t one you’re interested in. Doing a bit of looking around helps find the perfect tabletop game for you. This is one of the more group-focused options to go for, so you’re better off trying this with any close friends or family who’re interested in it, too.

    3. Cosplaying

Cosplaying has become an increasingly larger market in recent years, both as a hobby and as a potential business. You don’t need to spend too much time on social media to find quite a few popular cosplayers. This could make it one of the more interesting hobbies to go for, especially when you’re interested in games and anime.

It lets you role-play as your favorite characters while spending the time creating a cosplay outfit you’re actually proud of. It’s a more than tempting option.

The trick here is making sure you have the time to actually put into cosplaying. Creating your cosplay outfits yourself, if that’s the path you go down, takes a lot of time and effort to do well. Once you know what you’re doing, however, it’ll pay off quite a bit, and you’ll even have plenty of conventions to show off your cosplays at.

    4. Miniatures Painting

While all hobbies are supposed to be inherently relaxing, some are more relaxing than others. Painting miniatures can be one of the more notable of these, as you’re free to focus on the miniatures themselves without being disturbed by anything else. It could even be one of the more creative options to go for.

There are even plenty of different types of miniatures you can paint, with the likes of Warhammer 40k being one of the more famous. No matter what your specific interest, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t find quite a few miniature sets you can buy and start painting and enjoying.

    5. Independent Comics

The Marvel and DC Comics movies have made comic books a lot more popular over the past few decades. Naturally, they’ve led to countless people buying more and more comics, which can always be a great step to take. This can be one of the more interesting and creative areas to focus on.

But, that doesn’t mean you should just focus on DC and Marvel. As popular as these are, you’ll have more than a few other options on top of this.

While these mightn’t be as well-known as a few counterparts, they can often be a whole lot more interesting. You could end up finding franchises, superheroes, and even brands you’ll end up loving a lot more than you would more than their alternatives. There’s no reason not to give independent comics a chance.

    6. LARPing

Live action role-playing (LARPing) has been a popular hobby for quite some time, though it’s often somewhat mixed up with cosplaying in recent years. LARPers dress up and roleplay as historical figures and recreate battles throughout history, making it quite different from standard cosplaying.

Many LARPers choose to focus on Vikings or the American Civil War, for example, and there are plenty of groups you can join depending on what you’re interested in. While you’ll need to invest in your LARPing gear, this can be one of the more enjoyable and physically active hobbies you can go for.

It’s easy to see why so many hobbies are popular, but that doesn’t mean everyone wants to go for standard options like playing a sport or taking up an instrument. You could want to go for some of the more ‘nerdy’ options, and you’ve no reason not to. They can be a whole lot more enjoyable and interesting.

You’ll even have plenty of options to go for with this, with them each offering their pros and cons. There’s no reason not to consider them. You’ll be enjoying yourself and having a great time before you know it, and could even make a few friends, too.
