How to choose the right pizza packaging box for you

Choosing the right pizza box size and material isn’t just about accommodating your pizza; it also impacts its temperature, texture, and safety. Proper packaging preserves flavor, prolongs heat retention, and complies with food safety regulations. We’ve designed and produced dozens of pizza boxes, and here, we’ll guide you through the steps to choose the one that’s right for you.

Last updated: August 2025 | Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

This article will help you solve

    • Match the box type to the pizza type
    • Choose the right cardboard strength and flute type
    • Choose the right oil-proof coating to prevent oil stains from seeping out
    • Balanced insulation and breathability
    • Ensuring pizza boxes comply with food safety regulations

What’s the right pizza box size for you?

Start by considering the type of pizza and how it will be served. The size of a pizza box depends not only on its diameter but also on its height (which determines how much pizza it can hold) and the interior structure.

    • Standard pizza box size (12-inch pizza): 30cm × 30cm × 4.5cm, suitable for 3-4 people.
    • Large pizza box size (14-16 inch pizza): 35cm × 35cm × 5cm, suitable for multiple people to share.
    • Of course, it also has small pizza boxes (8-10 inches) and extra-large pizzas (over 18 inches), which may require smaller and larger boxes.

The right size can avoid crushing the pizza. Too small a size will squeeze the pizza, and too large a size will cause the pizza to shake. It can also improve the stacking capacity of pizza boxes and reduce moisture on the pizza bottom.

Common pizza box sizes and applications

Pizza TypeSizeFlute TypeWhat It Means for You
Thin Crust Pizza30*30*4.5cmE fluteLightweight, keeps edges crisp
Neapolitan33*33*5cmB Flute + Vent HolesReleases moisture, prevents sogginess
Deep-Dish Pizza33*33*5cmBC Double WallHigh stacking strength, suitable for heavy toppings

Note: Neapolitan pizza is a traditional pizza from the city of Naples in southern Italy, about 10–12 inches.

    Practical advice

    • Neapolitan Pizza: Because this pizza is more moist, use a perforated cover to vent steam and help remove moisture.
    • Thin-crust pizza: The cover has no holes, which helps to keep the pizza warm and crispy, and prevents moisture from escaping, thus preventing the pizza from getting damp and softening.
    • Heavy pizza: BC double corrugated wall can bear heavy weight and reduce the impact of transportation vibration on pizza.

Case: After a pizza shop in the United States changed the packaging of high-water content pizzas to breathable B-flute boxes, the proportion of customers complaining about the crust becoming damp and soft dropped by 40%.

What material can keep pizza warm and fresh?

Corrugated cardboard is the mainstream choice for pizza boxes. It has multiple advantages, taking into account insulation, strength and cost.

    Common corrugated types:

    • E-flute (1.2–1.5 mm): Smooth surface, suitable for high-quality printing.
    • B flute (2.5–3 mm): Its height and density are at a medium level, which can well protect pizza. It is often used for takeout and is also suitable for multiple printing.
    • BC double tile (5–6 mm): Heavy-duty, suitable for large pizzas without breaking or deformation.

The thickness of the packaging affects its insulation effectiveness; increasing thickness effectively slows heat loss. However, air circulation is equally important. A fully enclosed structure can easily absorb moisture, causing the pizza to soften. Well-defined ventilation holes can prevent moisture.

    Material selection and application

    Material TypeStrengthInsulationApplication

    White-top B FluteMediumGoodBranded takeout and dine-in

Tip: Test the pizza box cardboard for ECT (Edge Crush Strength). An ECT of 32+ is recommended for local delivery, and an ECT of 44+ is recommended for export or palletized shipments.

    Which coating is grease-resistant?

Untreated kraft paper will absorb oil, resulting in oily spots on the surface and softening of the structure.

    Common oil prevention solutions:

    1. Water-based coating – It has good oil and grease barrier properties, is environmentally friendly, biodegradable and recyclable.
    2. Food-grade oil-resistant coating – effectively prevents grease penetration and its oil-repellent performance lasts for 2 years.
    3. PFAS-Free Greaseproof Paper – Greaseproof paper that does not contain PFAS chemicals has been highly recommended in recent years and is also environmentally friendly.

Avoid coatings containing PFAS, which are difficult to degrade and pose health risks, so they have been banned in several US states and the EU.

How can you ensure your pizza boxes comply with food safety regulations?

Different countries and regions have different standards:

    • EU: EN 13430 Recyclability Standard
    • Australia: APCO Packaging Guidelines
    • United States: FDA food contact compliance, PFAS restrictions
    • China: Need to meet food safety laws and food contact material standards

Water-based or soy inks for printing are currently the best environmentally friendly and food-safe choices, and can comply with food safety standards such as GB4806.14.

How to choose the box type for takeout and dine-in?

    • Takeaway: Reinforced cardboard, corrugated boxes are recommended. Delivery time may be long and the pizza needs to be kept warm; with a certain number of ventilation holes to prevent the pizza from getting damp; the cover locks firmly for easy carry-on.
    • Dine-in: Lightweight, easy to open and close. Consider printing your brand logo for a better display. Ensure ventilation to facilitate moisture dissipation.
    • Semi-finished products: have certain heat resistance and can be heated in the oven.

How to make pizza boxes more environmentally friendly?

    • Use recycled paper or FSC certified cardboard
    • PLA and other biodegradable materials for coating
    • Use food-grade environmentally friendly ink to avoid pollution and be easily degraded.
    • Fixed 2–3 sizes to reduce waste and inventory costs

What printing methods can make pizza boxes more colorful?

    • Multi-color printing: Achieve rich color patterns
    • Surface treatment process: Translucent ink can bring unique feel and visual experience to the packaging.

Color difference control: ΔE ≤ 3, ensuring consistent brand color. We offer single-color and two-color flexo printing, as well as four-color printing, to meet your different budgets and desired results.

New pizza box trends in 2025

    • PFAS-free coating is environmentally friendly and has become the industry standard
    • The microporous backing paper promotes air circulation and protects against moisture while maintaining thermal insulation.
    • Short-run digital printing for limited edition marketing

    FAQs

Q1: Is corrugated paper or solid cardboard better for pizza boxes?

Corrugated paper has better thermal insulation and is suitable for takeout pizza boxes; solid cardboard is thinner and has a high-end appearance, but it is more expensive.

Q2: What size box should I use for a 14-inch pizza?

Usually 35×35×5 cm. The height is generally 4.5~5 cm.

Q3: What are the dimensions of a large pizza box?

    Pizza sizePizza Box DimensionsDescription

    Conclusion

Choose the right size and material based on pizza type, delivery distance, and brand needs. Use a greaseproof coating to ensure food safety compliance and reduce costs through standard sizes.

Next step: Conduct actual delivery tests before mass production to confirm performance.
