When the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art was first announced, we were excited. Considering what a student of film and art history the institution’s namesake and co-founder George Lucas is, the possibilities for exhibits are endless. Watching the building take shape in Los Angles has been equally exciting, especially with it’s close proximity to the new home of the space shuttle Endeavor.
AND THEN, the Museum announced Lucas himself would be present at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) to join a panel alongside Oscar winners Guillermo del Toro and Doug Chiang, moderated by Queen Latifah. This is a big deal for the convention, as George has never attended. Yes, you read that right- George Lucas has never attended Comic-Con. So, this is a pretty big first.
“We are beyond thrilled to welcome George Lucas to Comic-Con for the very first time. Nearly five decades ago, ‘Star Wars‘ made one of its earliest public appearances at our convention, along with a booth featuring Howard Chaykin’s now legendary ‘Star Wars‘ poster as a promotional item,” David Glanzer, Chief Communications and Strategy Officer of Comic-Con, said. “Now, to have Mr. Lucas return—this time to debut the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art—is a true full-circle moment. His lifelong dedication to visual storytelling and world-building resonates deeply with us and our community, and the museum’s mission to celebrate narrative art in all its forms perfectly reflects what Comic-Con has championed from the very beginning.”
We were lucky enough to attend the Sunday panel in Hall H, and we’ll be updating live!
Gotta love this guy dressed as a lightsaber 😂
George was welcomed so warmly by a standing ovation, and chants of “GEORGE, GEORGE.” (You can see my video of it linked below!)

Lucas describes the museum as “a temple to the people’s art.”
”the size of the building says this is a temple, this is rock and roll, and it needs to be enshrined,” GdT said.
Doug Chiang is talking about his history, beginning with his art akin to silent film. He also echoed how sad it was that comic art wasn’t taken seriously. “You will outgrow it,” he was told of his love for comic art. “I’m so glad I didn’t.”
Queen Latifah revealed she’s the daughter of an art teacher, and how she saw first hand so much of what Chiang spoke about.
“Myth unites us, propaganda divides us,” GdT says.
