Alongside seeing some top movies and television shows record huge numbers, other categories of entertainment, such as gaming, have also witnessed some notable success stories. These highest-grossing video games have amassed millions of players from the gaming community and vast sums of cash for the various companies that brought them to life in the first place.

These days, people are playing a wide range of smash-hit releases on a diverse selection of popular gaming platforms. In 2025, titles like Fortnite are being explored on almost every corner of the globe, people are also playing online casino triumphs like Capital Gains, and they’re enjoying successful spin-offs like Elden Ring Nightreign. For gamers seeking the very best releases to session, the viable options have never been so vast.

Although the undisputed favorites of today are also worth dedicating some time and attention to, the highest-grossing video games we’ve ever seen might deserve another look if you’ve never played them before, or it’s been a while since you have. So, with that in mind, below is a brief look at some of the highest-grossing gaming titles ever made.

    The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

With over 75 million copies sold at the time of writing, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the finest games we’ve ever seen. Developed by CD Projekt Red, it’s the company’s biggest success story yet after receiving plenty of traction since its release in 2015. As far as action role-playing games go, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the best ever.

    The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim

A fantastic game in its own right, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is another action role-playing masterpiece that gamers everywhere couldn’t wait to get their hands on. In fact, it was so popular that the game managed to amass over 60 million copies sold since 2011, according to Bethesda’s Todd Howard in an interview from 2023. From PS4 to PC, numerous gaming communities adore The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

    PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, a title that is also known as PUBG, is absolutely massive. A key player in the rise of the battle royale genre, it has managed to entertain over 75 million gamers since its release in 2017. It’s worth noting that these particular figures were released in 2021 and, since then, the game has employed a free-to-play model. Also managing to achieve over 1 billion mobile downloads in the same year, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ impact is huge.

    Wii Sports

When it first came to the fore in 2006, Wii Sports took the world by storm. Nintendo’s most fruitful product, the variety of fun mini games people could dabble in made it such a strong option. As such, the game managed to sell 83 million copies, making it the top-selling single-platform exclusive ever. While Wii Sports probably wouldn’t stand up against some of today’s sophisticated releases, it will always be remembered.

    Minecraft

Coming in ahead of other iconic releases like Grand Theft Auto 5, which managed to sell over 200 million units, Minecraft’s rise to the top has been staggering. This sandbox favorite has sold over 300 million copies and has even impacted other areas away from gaming. Minecraft really is massive, with people wearing merchandise and even watching the movie in cinemas.

    Tetris

Currently occupying top spot is Tetris, a timeless masterpiece that has also experienced a number of facelifts in the modern environment. The original game was where it all started for the puzzle title that first hit the shelves in 1985, though. Since then, over 520 million copies have been purchased across all platforms, with the game particularly thriving on mobile phones.
