Are you ready for more “Monster High” spooky shenanigans? Gerard Johnstone (“M3GAN”) will direct the newest live-action addition to the franchise. The film will be based on Mattel’s wildly popular doll line, of the same name.
Plot details for this particular project are under wraps at this time. But the toy line was first introduced in 2010. This doll line has since evolved into an animated web series, TV specials, movies, and books.

The dolls/characters are all teenage children of famous monsters and attend the fictitious Monster High. Some of this famous offspring includes Draculaura, the daughter of Dracula; Frankie Stein, the daughter of Frankenstein’s monster; Clawdeen Wolf, the daughter of the Werewolf; and Cleo de Nile, the daughter of the Mummy. So we can safely assume the film will probably involve some kind of monsters in teenage kinds of drama.
Robbie Brenner, President and Chief Content Officer of Mattel Studios, is producing with Akiva Goldsman. Mattel will be making the film in partnership with Universal Pictures and Goldsman’s Weed Road.
“Gerard’s unique vision and genre-blending style make him the perfect fit for this film,” Brenner said. “This is exactly what we’re building at Mattel Studios as we continue to work with top talent to tell fresh, unexpected stories from our rich portfolio of brands. Monster High is a fan-favorite franchise with endless storytelling potential, and we are thrilled to reimagine it in a monstrously exciting way with Gerard at the helm.”
“Monster High is delightfully personal to me — my daughters grew up loving the dolls and what they represent,” Goldsman said. “Gerard’s work is sharp, daring, and full of heart. He’s exactly the director this film needs.”
We’ll keep you posted on updates about the live-action “Monster High” film as the project develops.
