Recovery boots have become a staple of modern fitness kits, enabling athletes to beat crippling workout downtimes and get back on their exercise routines.

Although originally created to treat circulation-related disorders, compression wraps can provide multiple wellness benefits for professional athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

This post shall explore the impact of recovery boots in revving up your workout routine.

But first, let’s familiarize ourselves with these essential fitness supplies and how they came about.

    What Are Recovery Boots?

Recovery boots are inflatable workout devices designed to wrap around the legs or arms, increasing blood circulation to these areas. They’re also known as compression wraps or pneumatic compression boots.

Recovery boots utilize pressure to stimulate blood flow to the legs and arms. The idea is to ramp up the supply of oxygen and essential nutrients to muscles after working out, while flushing out metabolic waste.

Many athletes utilize recovery boots to accelerate muscle repair following strenuous workouts. You may also encounter these boots at your local gym or medical clinic.

    How Do Recovery Boots Work?

As mentioned, recovery boots essentially work by stimulating blood flow to the muscles in your feet and legs. These pneumatic compression wraps utilize air pressure to force venous and arterial fluid back, increasing blood flow while promoting the elimination of waste products from the muscle tissues.

The net effect? A faster recovery from post-workout pain, inflammation, and fatigue.

To improve their efficiency, recovery boots work by mimicking the natural flow of our cardiovascular and lymphatic systems. This ingenious design allows the wraps to enhance blood flow, particularly to body parts furthest from the heart.

Increased blood flow means more oxygen and nutrients are transported to your leg and hand muscles, helping to speed up recovery after workouts.

Where Did Recovery Boots Originate From?

Pneumatic compression boots were invented in 1998 by renowned physician bioengineer Laura F. Jacobs.

Jacobs originally designed recovery boots for use in cancer treatment centers. By stimulating blood circulation, these wraps could prevent blood clots among chemotherapy patients. Cancer patients could then monitor their progress more accurately, as they had fewer side effects to contend with.

Not long after their invention, pneumatic compression boots began to pique the interest of professional athletes. Jacobs’ son, Gilad Jacobs, discovered that these wraps could accelerate post-exercise recovery quite effectively.

Compression boots are non-invasive, making them more desirable than regular post-workout medications, most of which are notorious for inducing adverse reactions.

Today, recovery boots are one of the most sought-after post-workout recovery aids in the athletic and fitness communities.

Potential Health Benefits of Recovery Boots

    1. Increasing Blood Circulation

Stimulating blood circulation is the most outstanding health benefit of recovery boots. These inflatable wraps utilize compression to enhance blood flow from the heart to the extremities and back to the heart.

Blood flowing from the heart carries more oxygen and vital nutrients that our muscles require after enduring strenuous workouts. Conversely, the blood that flows from the muscles assists in the removal of metabolic wastes through the kidneys.

This combination is critical in enhancing post-workout recovery.

According to one study investigating the relationship between compression therapy and blood circulation, researchers found that compression bandaging caused a significant increase in blood circulation while reducing edema.

    2. Soothing Muscle Soreness

Muscle soreness and fatigue are natural consequences of strenuous workouts. They’re usually caused by micro-tears, particularly in the leg and hand muscles, resulting in waste materials like lactic acid accumulation.

Wearing pneumatic compression boots increases the rate of blood circulation around the muscles, helping to flush out these toxic wastes.

In fact, using recovery boots right after engaging in short, intense workouts can prevent the buildup of waste products. It’s a proactive way to minimize workout downtimes.

    3. Alleviating Inflammation

Like soreness, muscle inflammation is a direct result of high-intensity workouts.

But while the swelling may improve and eventually resolve itself within a day or two, it can cause excruciating discomfort while it lasts. Besides, untreated muscle inflammation can trigger downtimes and adversely impact your workout routines.

Fortunately, recovery boots have proven effective at soothing post-workout inflammation. These inflatable wraps utilize intermittent pneumatic compression to reduce fluid retention, a major cause of swelling in the legs and arms.

    4. Treating DOMS

Delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) is a condition marked by excruciating pain and inflammation following periods of vigorous exercise. It’s one of the leading causes of workout downtimes, making it particularly dreadful for seasoned athletes or fitness buffs.

DOMS typically resolve within 1 – 3 days. But if you reckon that waiting that long might hurt your fitness routine, knowing you can treat the condition using compression boots is exciting.

Recovery boots treat DOMS by alleviating its primary symptoms – muscle pain and inflammation.

    5. Maintaining Range of Motion

Recovery boots may also help to restore range of motion, which is usually diminished following rigorous workouts.

Compression boots enable you to maintain or even improve your mobility after a workout by numbing muscle pain.

The wraps notably increase flexibility around the joints by ramping blood circulation to these areas.

    6. Managing PPT

The pressure to pain threshold (PPT) refers to the point at which a pressure stimulus transitions from a feeling of normal pressure to a sense of pain. Measuring a person’s sensitivity to pain in their deeper muscular tissues is a crucial metric.

Now, the PPT is typically low after engaging in strenuous workouts. The implication is that even a mild pinch on your skin registers as considerable tenderness.

Recovery boots can increase the pressure to pain threshold after workouts, making them critical in accelerating muscle recovery.

    7. Stress Relief

While recovery boots are synonymous with post-workout treatments, you can use them right before hitting the gym to manage performance anxiety.

Applying gentle pressure on your extremities increases blood circulation throughout the body, including the central nervous system (CNS).

An increased blood flow to the CNS can stimulate sensitivity to “feel-good” hormones like serotonin, keeping you happy and energized during workouts.

    Wrap Up

Recovery boots may have been invented to improve blood circulation. However, compression wraps have proven effective at minimizing workout downtimes for professional athletes and fitness buffs.

Recovery boots’ ability to soothe muscle soreness and inflammation makes them ideal for treating post-workout disorders like DOMS. Besides, these pneumatic compression wraps can reduce performance anxiety by improving blood circulation to the brain before and during high-stakes athletic competitions.

The cherry on the cake is that recovery boots are non-invasive and remarkably easy to use. Unlike conventional post-workout medications, these wraps won’t trigger any side effects.
