“M3GAN” Returns to Theaters, Encourages Cell Phone Use

We are almost halfway to spooky season, and Blumhouse is celebrating with several theatrical re-releases. The company will be bringing “M3GAN,” “Annabelle,” and “Ma” back to the big screen for one-night-only showings. These releases will build upon Blumhouse’s annual Halfway to Halloween celebration.

“M3GAN” screenings will even have a twist that allows fans to chat with the killer AI.

These special screenings will launch Meta’s Movie Mate technology which will let users talk to a M3GAN chat bot. As well as, access exclusive content, trivia, and behind-the-scenes info in real-time. This includes “sneak peeks, exclusive recorded messages from directors and talent from the films, and surprise special appearances in select markets.”

“Movie Mate is only available to moviegoers who are in a theater, and works by DM’ing the Instagram account @M3GAN account to start the experience,” reads the press release. “The entire experience is designed to leverage Meta’s capabilities to augment and uplevel the ‘second screen’ viewing experience aimed at generating excitement ahead of the release of ‘M3GAN 2.0’ on June 27.”

    Theaters Reactions

Theater chain Alamo Drafthouse has already confirmed its strict no phones policy will remain enforced. So viewers that want to see “M3GAN” in theaters without phones everywhere still have that option. The offering is just a lot more limited.

Remeber last year when theaters begged people to stop using their phone during “Wicked” and we could still afford bread? Those were the days.

“The question we always ask ourselves is why can’t every day be Halloween? So Halfway to Halloween brings us one step closer, and I couldn’t be happier that this year we are going nationwide,” Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, said in a statement. “In that same spirit of trying new things, we’re excited to give M3GAN fans an all-new experience in theaters from the team from Meta.”

“We are excited to continue our longstanding history of innovation in the theatrical space with our friends at Universal Pictures,” Omar Zayat, group lead entertainment, tech, travel, gaming, and auto at Meta, said in a statement. “The M3GAN in-theater Movie Mate is a first-to-market moviegoer experience. We are happy to introduce filmgoers to it by way of Instagram Direct and Click-to-Messenger Ads. We are thrilled to be working with Universal Pictures and Blumhouse to deliver rich experiences designed to get audiences back into theaters.”

These re-releases will happen in select theaters of the following dates:

    • April 30 – “M3GAN”
    • May 7 – “Annabelle”
    • May 14 – “Ma”
