Since the 2018 hit “Hereditary,” filmmaker Ari Aster has been one of the golden boys of A24. So it’s no surprise he is partnering with the studio again for “Eddington.” It stars Joaquin Phoenix (“Beau Is Afraid”), Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”), and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), and just got its first perplexing teaser.

The minute-long teaser opens with a phone screen doom scrolling while the cast spews various COVID conspiracy theories. In the short-form footage, we are introduced to the town of Eddington, where the people “like guns” and apparently fighting.
A24’s brief description of the film doesn’t give us a lot more information. “In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.”
Phoenix, Pascal, and Stone star alongside Austin Butler (“Dune: Part Two”), Luke Grimes (“Yellowstone”), and Deirdre O’Connell (“The Penguin”). Micheal Ward (“The Beautiful Game”), Amélie Hoeferle (“Night Swim”), Clifton Collins Jr. (“Train Dreams”), and William Belleau (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) also star.
This will be Aster’s fourth film with A24 following “Hereditary,” “Midsommar,” and “Beau Is Afraid.”
“Eddington,” premieres at the Cannes Film Festival which runs from May 13th to 24th. With an American release set for July 18th. You can check out the first teaser below:
