Frank Sinatra
It is not hard to think about legendary figures who are associated with the casino world. Probably none more legendary than Frank Sinatra and his Ratpack. He was one of the entertainers who first put Vegas on the map and was a fixture of the town for forty-three years. He first performed there in September 1951 and was still crooning in May 1984.
Sinantra’s first performance was at the Desert Inn (little more than a glorified motel), and his last was at the 5,000-seater MGM Grand. His favourite haunt was the now-demolished Sands Hotel, where he both stayed and performed at least three times a year, often holding residencies.
After Sinatra’s death in 1988, actor Gregory Peck said,
“With his little gang of merry men, he established forever a sense of free-floating fun and frolic that captured the imagination of the world.”
He paved the way for hundreds of other entertainment stars who went on to grace Vegas’ stages and established the idea of the residency. Everyone from Lady Gaga to Janet Jackson, Garth Brooks, Adele, and Drake have enjoyed sell-out shows in the self-proclaimed gambling capital of the world.
Drake
Talking of Drake, it is hard to mention the words gambling and celebrity without thinking of him. While he does not actually feature in a casino game, he has, in some respects, turned himself into a casino game. Drake is infamous for placing enormous and not terribly successful bets. However, his latest ‘bet’ with crypto casino Stake seems to be coming up roses.
The Canadian rapper has hosted several streamed events known as Drake Vs. Stake, where he has been known to make gigantic wagers in his own live roulette gameplay. As well as chalking up some significant wins for himself, he also hands out Bitcoin packages of between $20,000 and $75,000 to online players during the course of the stream. To date, there have been at least five such events, with around $1 million worth of crypto being won each time.
However, Drake does not seem to have mastered when to cash out. In one stream, he started with $8.5 million, topped out at almost $27.2 million, but finished up with less than $2,000 by the end of the session. However, the rumour is that he is not playing with his own money and the casino is fronting the money for his outlandish bets.
