The Most Expensive Rolex Models Ever Sold

Rolex is one of those brand names that immediately makes you think of high expense, unrivalled quality, and prestige.

It’s a brand that many of us consider a bucket list purchase, with the already high demand for high quality timepieces only elevated further by the connection between Rolex and celebrity ambassadors and prestigious figures.

In short, if you’re looking for a timepiece that boasts history, is made from the finest materials, is solidified in exquisite craftsmanship, and has direct links to some of history’s most famous figures and most iconic designers, then look no further than a Rolex.

Of course, there are some Rolex watches that are more accessible than others. For the sake of this article, we’re pushing the boundaries of realism and sharing some of the most expensive Rolex watches to ever make their way to market.

    The Most Expensive Rolex Ever

The most expensive Rolex was the Paul Newman Daytona, which sold at auction for $17.8 million in 2017.

The Daytona was first released in all its glory in 1965 as a timepiece for race car drivers, though its mechanics had featured in Rolex watches from as far back as the 1930s. 1963 marked the release of the Daytona under its former name, the Chronograph, though the Daytona name was attached to the watch after its link with the Daytona race track in Florida.

Interestingly, the Paul Newman Daytona is no different from the other Daytona’s from the same collection. What sets it apart is its former ownership and status. The exact timepiece that sold for $17.8 million was given to Newman by his wife while filming a movie, shrouding the piece in history and making it the most coveted Rolex in the world.

Other Expensive Rolex Models and Timepieces

A record in the horological world, the Paul Newman Daytona is by no means the only Daytona to have fetched an extraordinary amount on the market.

Another notable model and timepiece is the Daytona 626 Unicorn, crafted from 18 karat white gold – an elevated material that pushed the value and status of the timepiece sky high.

The Rolex Bao Dai is another timepiece that’s recognisable among fans of the brand – combining its yellow gold case and black dial (which is considered one of the rarest pairings throughout Rolex’s history). Just like the Daytona’s that we have already mentioned, this exceptionally valuable Rolex watch is not new – rather, it was originally sold to the last emperor of the Nguyen dynasty in Vietnam way back in 1954. In 2017, it fetched over $5 million at auction.

Other incredibly expensive Rolex models include:

    ●   Antimagnetique 4113 1942 release, which sold for $2.5 million in 2016

    ●   Eric Clapton’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

    ●   Marlon Brando’s Rolex GMT-Master

Interestingly, the collection of Rolex’s most expensive timepieces tend to owe much of their coveted status to either A-list ownership and connection, or to being a part of Rolex’s history and the rollout of exceptional new features and materials.

What Makes Rolex so Consistently Expensive?

As mentioned above, prestige and status have a major role to play when it comes to valuing an authentic Rolex timepiece. The most popular timepieces and watches are the ones that we see celebrities wearing – or even the ones that they have owned themselves.

This direct link with the wealthy and famous makes every Rolex investment feel like being a part of that world of power and prestige.

This is further enhanced by the lack of supply, offset by the incredibly high demand which surrounds every Rolex. And let’s not forget the quality of the craftsmanship and the high expense materials that make up every authentic Rolex.

All things considered, it’s little wonder genuine Rolex models collect such avid attention at auction and on the market.

    Buying Your Own Rolex

A Rolex is something that you can pass down from generation to generation, withstanding the test of time and changing trends. With a value that increases as the years go on, finding your perfect Rolex is just the first step into a lifelong bond with this iconic and incredible luxury brand.

Visiting your local boutique reseller will give you a sense of what’s available, with most offering valuation and authentication services as well as part exchanges should you have a luxury item to sell. Book an appointment to start your search and find your perfect Rolex.
