The crew behind “New Jedi Order,” the Daisy Ridley-led “Star Wars” movie, is starting to fill out. George Nolfi (“Ocean’s 12”) will now be handling the script. The movie will still be the narrative feature debut for documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”), who is directing.

“New Jedi Order” was announced almost two years ago at Star Wars Celebration in London. Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and Justin Britt-Gibson (“The Strain”) were the initial writers for the script. Soon after they were announced, Obaid-Chinoy joined the project, and then it was confirmed that Ridley would be reprising her role. By April 2023, Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”) had taken over writing but he exited the project by October 2024.
Despite the complications with the writing team, “New Jedi Order” will center around Rey Skywalker (Ridley). The story is still expected to take place 15 years after the events of 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.” Having Rey switch gears from Jedi mentor to Jedi master.
The film was originally set to release after the recently wrapped feature “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is slated to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. This anticipated release window has since been pushed back to an unknown time period. “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” will now be followed up by Shawn Levy’s (“Deadpool & Wolverine”) still untitled “Star Wars” film.
Like always, we hope that these changes behind the scenes and delays are to ensure the movie isn’t rushed and the highest quality that it can be. While delays are a bummer, bad entries into long-established franchises are a scourge. Art takes time and the creative process doesn’t always work well with schedules.
We will keep you posted on updates about “New Jedi Order” as the film develops.
